When the goal is light weight, the stand bag market could be an arms race in losing ounces. Taking a different approach with the HyperLite Zero and instead of focusing on creating the lightest weight possible, Callaway has focused on creating the gold standard in light weight carry bags available.
So what is new? Well, pretty much everything. For those that have heard me rant about golf bag design and innovation, you know where I stand on this. So little headway was made for a number of years and far too many golfers got sucked into choosing their bag strictly based on color, rather than performance. Speaking of functionality, let’s dive into some of the tech.
The Callaway HyperLite Zero features something called SHAFT SHIELD. What is it? Well, pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Callaway has created a rubber overmold to take the place of the mesh commonly found on other stand bags. Testing showed that the typical mesh created wear spots on shafts over time, so Callaway put this proprietary overmold in place to solve this problem. A byproduct of the design is that by eliminating that mesh material, the bag is a bit more open at the top, allowing for less rubbing or snagging.
Two areas that should stand out almost immediately to golfers are about comfort for those that walk. Even if you are not a walker, but merely carry your clubs from car to club, you will notice a difference. The Callaway HyperLite Zero has added Anatomic Shoulder Straps to allow for a better feeling carry through the shoulders and neck. Adding to this, is the Extended Comfort Hip Pad. Most companies speak of padding where the bag hits your hip while carrying, however, the HyperLite Zero has gone a step further. Their padding is larger than most, but also has a closed Cell foam that won’t be worn-in like your favorite seat on the sofa after a few months.
Finally, we want to touch on the legs. After all, this is a stand bag and a light one at that. The Callaway HyperLite Zero uses carbon fiber on the legs to reduce weight and offer durability. In using this bag for the better part of the last month, the leg design hasn’t given us a single issue. No tangle. No stand up and have them not open. And most importantly to us, no what we call, “the give”. When your bag is a bit heavy and the legs start sliding out from under the bag.
With performance and features covered, let’s talk a little about actual use of the Callaway HyperLite Zero. First thing that has to be mentioned here is the perfectly positioned cell phone pocket. No need to use the valuables pouch and have to zip or unzip to grab your phone, the pocket is accessible as you carry. Next, the pockets themselves are larger than expected when you look at the bag. To test this out, we loaded it up for a recent round. Rain gear and two dozen balls on one side, gloves in the other. Keys and wallet in the valuables pouch fit perfectly along with bandaids, medicine, etc. Pretty much everything fit that we would want or need to bring with room to spare, which was surprising considering the overall size of the bag.
So what is missing? With every bag we have tried, there has always been some drawbacks, even if they are filled with positives. In this instance, not sure we have found any as of yet. Over the course of the year, we will update the THP Forum with more usage as we continue to check on durability.
Color options are aplenty with 12 different options and two that stood out immediately for those that don’t want your typical black or navy. First is The Paradym which is sharp in person. The colors are bold enough to pop, but subdued enough to not look out of place. The other is the Black/White/Sage which is a fairly muted look, but very different from what you see normally at the course or range. So which one would you pick?
- Black
- Black Camo
- Red/White/Navy/USA
- Graphite
- Royal / White
- Fire / Black
- Flo Yellow / Navy
- Navy
- Black / White / Sage
- Hunter / White
- White / Navy
- Paradym
The Callaway HyperLite Zero golf bags will hit stores today and have a retail price of $279.00.
Good write up @JB
This seems like a good bag. If you use your motorized cart I would be interested in how the legs hold up to being strapped in there. I feel like my push cart kind of warps the legs on most of my bags.
This seems to check all the boxes. I love a light bag. (Former caddie…)
The SHAFT SHIELD is something that sounds amazing and is long overdue on golf bags. That mesh on the dividers of other bags wears outs seemingly 100 times quicker than anything else on the bags I have owned. Very impressive array of color options.

I have only used it on a motorized cart one time and it seemed to work rather well.
If I was nearly always a push cart person, I would opt towards one of the bags with LowRider Tech, such as the Fairway+
I am using the Black/White/Sage with the Goat Cup logo on the front and absolutely love that color way.

I had that same thought. Pretty cool new thing on the bag.
It looks good. My experience with Callaway stand bags has been really positive. While some of the elastic and dividers have worn, mine is 10+ years old and is still functional.
Seems well thought out and efficient in how they’ve balanced space and weight.
Is the color you have? I’m liking it.

No sir. In the picture showing all of them in the article, my bag is the fourth from the left.
Although I’m a huge fan of the 14-way divider, I’ll have to check this out in person, because a lot of the design makes sense for carrying.
If I wasn’t getting a new bag in a few months, this would be a top contender.
Yes finally. This bag looks so good and will end up being my gamer bag once j can get my hands on one! Great write up!!! Ok 22 GD team tell me more!!!
Looks really nice. Prices accordingly. Seems to have every option needed. I like it.

Nice write up @JB . I’m gonna have to take a look at this bag as walking and carrying is my thing. Interested in the straps and the comfort. Could a pic be posted of the strap set up?
Shaft shield is interesting piece, the white bag looks so nice.
It may not seem like much, but the little things that are being changed are pretty big imo. Reading about the legs and how they have been stabilized is what interested me the most. That is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to the legs on a golf bag.

The SHAFT SHIELD is one area of this bag that stands out to me!
Enjoyed the write up. Will definitely look more into these when I need a new bag. Really like the dividers and over mold to save golf shafts.
I’ve really enjoyed my Hyperlite 3 over the past several years. The overmold on the top of the bag looks great, and I like a bit more space to get clubs in and out. Plus no mesh to wear out before anything else. Lots of great color options in the lineup too. If I were in the market I’d be looking at this, especially with my experience with the HL3.
I appreciate that the branding is not super large and I enjoy the variety in colors. I walk/push a lot and saving a few ounces In weight doesn’t seem like a lot but it’s huge on hot summer days.
I like what I see with this bag but want to give it a look, lift, and feel in person.
I’m in the market for a new bag and this one is definitely a contender. Looks clean.
I like a lot that I am reading here. Shaft Shield also fixes one area where I’ve struggled with multiple Cally bags in the past so that’s a huge + in my book. I do wish it had low rider on it, but it’s meant as a true carry bag so I’m good with that.
Im here for the Shaft Shield overmold feature. That is so smart and something that I hope becomes standard for Callaway bags going forward.
Also I would love to see the black/white/sage in person because I think it looks pretty unique in the picture.
Very cool. Seems they have thought of everything with this bag. Love the color ways. I didn’t really like that light green and blue bag from afar, but it looks really good up close with those pictures you shared
I think my favorite colorway though is the leftest most bag on the right side of the photo (white / navy colorway)
I may have missed this, but what is the weight of the bag?
The legs were one thing that stood out to me. They are super sturdy, and they dont flap around.
I was a dummy and left mine in California to be shipped.
I know @drp3434 has used his quite a bit since we got back. I’m sure he’ll be along to provide some feedback.

Totally agree on the legs. I have packed this pretty darn full of clubs for testing and traveling and haven’t had an issue as of yet with any slouch or “giving”

I am excited to get this bag back out on course. I have a very light stand bag, and I keep the pockets as empty as possible, as I am either walking and carrying, using my Motocaddy, or hiring a walking caddy, so lightweight is the number 1 thing I am looking at. I’ll have a good comparison between the Hyperlite Zero and my old bag once mine comes in. Weight, opening size, pocket sizes, all the good stuff.
The shaft shield is legit. One of my main complaints with bags in general is that the foam around the dividers always wears out and comes apart. Doesn’t look like it will be a problem with this bag.
The new colorways that are coming out this year are so clean. Unfortunately, no pictures to share.
That Navy bag is really sharp. Like the rubberized top. Great article JB.
I really like the look of these. The top club sections looks different but I like the way it looks. Carbon fiber legs is a nice touch. I’d go black camo or graphite.
This is the colorway of the bag the Grandaddy participants received. So sharp.

Outside of the one I have, that is my favorite option.
One very nice thing about this bag is that the straps are removeable, and you can choose to use only one strap. Why is this something I like?
When I use the bag on my motorized cart, I can leave the straps in the car, so they don’t get in the way, or if the wheels are kicking up water, they won’t get wet for no good reason. I don’t need the straps to load the bag by my car. The handle will be plenty for that.
Some resorts with caddies recommend a single strap bag, since the caddies tend to double bag, and a single strap can be easier for them to work with. You can even swap which way the strap hangs, so it can easily be carried with either left or right shoulder with no issues.
My current bag, the straps are sewn into place, which saves some weight, but doesn’t offer any of the strap options the hyperlite zero does.

I believe it’s 3 pounds. VERY light.

When he says very light, it is! Weight for a bag is a big deal to me. This bag is amazingly light! In fact when we first had the chance to look at them during the presentation, I passed the bag to @Saywhat4412 with ease and could have done it one handed if I wanted. It is so light!
the color choices are so good! Vibrant and a color for everyone! Absolutely love this bag!!

I was hoping to get a better look at it, but they don’t have the Paradym color up yet on the site. Seems to me it’s a darker navy, than the navy they also offer. But from the picture showing all the bags, it looks really good.
These bags look fantastic.
As someone who plays 99% of their rounds at a course that doesn’t allow walking, it probably is not for me, but I do love to see some true innovation coming to the golf bag – as @JB said in the article, there hasn’t been a lot of that.

Like the one strap option for sure – I won’t buy a carry bag if I can’t convert it.

I need a new bag like hole in the head however I’ll look at these next time I’m at the PGATSS.

These look great! @JB last year, Callaway introduced tech to allow their bags to sit on push carts better. Is that included on this or is this intended for carry purposes primarily? I really like what they did with the top of the bag, I think that is a great way to protect your clubs
These look great! I love that Paradym color option. The ShaftShield technology is definitely the biggest selling point for me. I’d be willing to bet we start seeing other companies adopt a similar approach to replacing the traditional mesh in the future. Great to be ahead of the game on this.
Thanks for the write up

This bag is amazing. I love the pocket layout, and it looks like it will be great on a push cart or walking.
I have used this bag a lot since getting home. I have tested it in every way possible carrying, push cart and riding cart. It is super light being only 3 lbs. It is easily the best bag I have ever carried because of the weight being so light and weight distribution. I don’t carry very much but just wanted to test it out. The straps are surprisingly comfortable and well built. If you do carry I think this is probably the best carrying bag on the market. I generally walk with a Clicgear 4.0 and alphard v2 during my regular Sunday morning play. The first time I used it with the alphard I didn’t have the wheelie bars attached and it tipped over several times because the bag was so light. It just didn’t have enough weight on the front so any decent hill it would topple over. That is my fault for not bringing them and not a slight on the bag. The same thing would have happened with my old bag Ping Hoofer but probably a little more so with this bag. While strapped into the push cart of riding cart the bag can turn a bit at first until its sideways then doesn’t move. I have found that is with any bag that doesn’t have the lowrider design. There is plenty of storage and the pockets are deep but easily accessible. I find it easier to search for things in this bag then I did with my hoofer. The color we got is the white/hunter that @captaincaution mentioned earlier. The website picture doesn’t come close to doing it justice. The green is very vibrant and the bag looks great. This bag is really fantastic.
I like the angled base and how it sits on the ground when the legs are out! Makes sense!
Callaway is making huge improvements in the bag market. They Hyperlite Zero is really good. Shaft shield tech is going to be a game changer in bags it is well done and will keep your club shafts looking good. There is way more room in this bag than you would imagine. I typically also prefer a 14 way top and when using this at the Grandaddy i found taking clubs in and out was easy. I am starting to do more walking and when my bag arrives will be carrying some rounds and not using the pushcart. The weight is a nice change from my current bag. Having the ability to remove the straps when using a push cart is also a nice option. I left mine in Cali and i didn’t take any pics as i was going to make sure i didn’t accidently post them prior to release.

Yeah the stand is really well built. I hate to keep comparing it to the hoofer but I have used that bag all of last year so it’s the easiest way for me to compare. The stand on this bag is significantly better. It comes out quicker and I find it a lot more sturdy. With my old bag I would set it out but need to check and make sure it’s ok. I don’t even give this a second thought I just tilt it over and it sticks to the ground.
Good looking bag, I am not a walker (carrier of the bag that is) – but always interested in seeing improvement in bag tech – and the colors look really really nice. I will have to go to a local golf store and see these in person.
Pretty nice looking bags, that blue/lime definitely pops! GD crew who used midsize grips, how was club tangle with this?

Oh plenty extra. As we mentioned that cell phone pocket a lone is a good one. The hip pad being elongated and made of a completely different material than the rest of the industry, and my personal favorite is the lack of mesh on the top, which is proprietary to this bag currently I believe.

LowRider Tech is not on this one. The Fairway+ would be a great option there if you want a stand bag that works well with push carts.
