The SMS Wedges from Edel have proven to be not just an interesting innovation, but a revelation in wedge fitting and performance. When the notion was presented that movable weights in wedges could make the kind of impact which Edel was claiming, many scoffed, but not for long.
The Swing Match System (SMS) means the ability to fine tune the weighting of a club to the individuals swing rather than the swing to the club, and combined with traditional shaft, loft, and lie fitting it has proven a new level of performance potential. Edel has been riding that wave by adding irons since the introduction of the wedges, but they aren’t entirely done with the wedges yet as today they are introducing a new grind, the P-Grind.
Edel SMS Wedge Technology and Performance
Regular readers of the THP Homepage or Community are likely quite familiar with the Edel SMS wedges and the technology behind them. Rather than delve too deeply into that again, those seeking more should dive into this earlier review done by our very own Dan Edwards in the THP Club Lab:
Introducing the SMS P-Grind
As for the new, it is time to welcome the P-Grind which now joins the original four SMS Wedge sole options. The P-Grind is what Edel considers a “true players grind”. Overall, it gives the wedge a wider sole while maintaining a lower overall amount of bounce. While one goal was definitely to provide more options, this is the first time we are seeing a pretty specialized grind from Edel.
What I mean by that is the P-Grind is offered only in 58 and 60 degree loft options. The reason for that is a focus on bringing the benefits of a wider sole with less bounce to the shots closest to the green. Everyone wants more versatility on those tricky touch shots, and the feedback which Edel has gotten from golfers of all skill levels has led them to the P-Grind checking all those boxes.
The Details
The P-Grind from Edel will be available 2/17/23 directly through the company as well as fitters across the nation. The starting price for this grind, as well as the others which make up the SMS Wedge lineup, remains $199.99 with many custom options available.
Would the P-Grind potentially fit your needs around the greens? Have you tried any of the other SMS Wedges from Edel? Take a walk on the wild side and jump into the conversation below as well as on the THP Community and let the golfing world know just what you think!
Seems like a great option to add to there wedge grinds, and allows them to have a grind lineup comparable to most.
Very interesting. Less bounce is for the hard surfaces, right? So these are going to be greenside bunkers and such (I mean if they only come in 58/60 it’s not like they can go far). Adding a new grind option is great.
Looks like this release from Edel is going to put some options on the players side of the table.

No sir. Wider soles and in some ways bounce is your friend in bunkers.

So would this be a good option to use to replace my current lob wedge, which I never use and keep this in the bag just for bunkers?
Options are always a consumer win. I do prefer a little less bounce in the lob wedge spot.

Possibly. That is player dependent for sure.
Would definitely like to try out one of those in 58 degrees. It looks extremely verstatile and would be really fun to try out a lot of different chip / pitch shots with it.
I’m scared I’m going to be picking up wedges to match my irons now.

It’s worth it.
The wider sole is a great addition to the lineup.
Sweeet. Love the direction Edel went this year
I was pleased to see them adding to the grind options, imo, that only strengthens what the SMS are.

It is indeed a wide soles lob wedge. 😉

Just softly floating golf balls landing all around the green, wherever you want to put it
@JB asked about what wedge he should get a few weeks ago. He had some parameters that this wedge seems to fit perfectly.. maybe that question was prompted by this wedge.

It really wasn’t, but probably should have, as I have tried it a bit.
I have ordered one, so hopefully as they catch up on equipment orders, stuff ships before travel.
How much does the wide sole help protect digging?

Generally speaking, quite a bit. Part of that will depend on leading edge of course, along with head manipulation by the player, but a wide sole can certainly help.
Nice write-up @Jman ! I’m gonna leave this one to a more capable ball striker than myself! Looks good though.
I’d like to try this in Arizona bunkers

Do it. The wedges are truly incredible. Best wedges I’ve ever had and I’ve go through Cleveland, Vokey, Ping, Mizuno, and a few other off names.
Bump. I almost missed this article. I’ve been looking for new wedges. (Don’t get along with Raw). How would these benefit my game I guess is the question?

The Edel SMS wedges are so good. I the P grind is a new grind and I haven’t tried it, but I have used the V grind and T grind. The wedges are just absolutely pure, great spin, feel incredible, and the movable weights can really dial you in more that you would expect. I’ve been saying it for a while but the Edel SMS wedges are the best I’ve ever played.

Wondering this too, I’m in a 60C right now and wondering if the wider sole will help more with forgiveness off the turf. I tend to get a bit too much sand on bunker shots and was thinking about trying a D grind for more bounce but now I’m wondering if a wider sole might help more.
I went to their site to check out the SMS Pro irons but found myself with some wedges in the cart.
Would I be correct in drawing some parallels between the P-grind sole and the old PM-Grind sole from Callaway?

I believe these will offer better ability to clip it off firmer tighter lies.

I’m not so much either but only available in 58 and 60 bc of the ability to open the face in tighter lies

So you almost get a little cut shot?
These look like a great addition to their lineup. Really nice looking wedges.
Excited about this one as well. I had a lot of success with my SMS last season, and that wide sole looks promising. Really pondering this in a 58*.
Having one in hand now. Has some some similarities to the PM grind that has been stuck in my bag forever.
Played my Edel 60 deg P grind today for the first time. I can’t wait til the spring and practice with it on grass but for first time out on a soggy course I was very happy with it. Seemed a lot heavier than my old Volkey but so far I love it. Had a couple shots that stopped right at the pin and a couple chunks but look forward to more practicing with it!

Missed this one from earlier…They both have a wide sole, but the P Grind is lower bounce. The P Grind would perform better on firmer conditions for most.

Usually I would be worried about chunking it in soggy turf but after the first few times I used it seems like it just cut thru the turf without stopping which I think is do to weights on the bottom.

Ditto. I’ll cross post from the big wedge review thread.

Got a little short game work in with the 60* P grind.
It was about 36 degrees, so no feel thoughts. ?
It really sits nice. Easy to toe down or open up.
Low-bounce wedges have been my nemesis. Tried a few full swing off into the range and that did not go well. Not that that is what I want out of a 60*.
Chipping, pitching seemed like the grind was more consistent than the V-grind I tried earlier. Again, easy to manipulate flight with a good strike. Still possibly a bit more punishing with toe contact than I would like but early returns at this point.
Going to try to use it more green side in better condition and see what happens

That’s a good wish. it was really fun to hit. Something with the wider sole made it play more forgiving and versatile than what you might expect from a wedge on the lower bounce side of things.
Man, this grind can pick it.
