Vokey SM9 wedges were introduced to the world one year ago, and for anyone who follows the release trends in the golf industry, there is an understanding that 2023 does not shape up to be the year of a new SM lineup. But Titleist still has tricks up their sleeves to help keep the SM9 in the conversation as they understand that golfers like additional options, so that is what we are talking about today. Recently, Vokey announced a line extension where T grind, usually a WedgeWorks exclusive, will make its way into the main lineup in the 58° and 60° lofts. Today, they are announcing a fresh take on a dark finish, which they call the new Vokey Design Jet Black Premium wedge.
Vokey wedges already provide golfers with four different finishes, Tour Chrome, Brushed Steel, Jet Black, and Tour Raw. Today’s announcement of the new Jet Black Premium adds a fifth option that, according to Titleist, will bring increased durability. While five finishes might seem overkill to some, Bob Vokey understands the importance of finding a wedge that suits one’s eye.
“A player has to love their wedge when they look down at it, and finish plays a key role,” said Master Craftsman Bob Vokey. “Having confidence in your wedge at address is hugely important.”
This new Jet Black Premium wedge features Titleist’s latest finish, known as Titanium Carbide Vapor. Most of us who have experienced darker finishes on irons or wedges understand that they only look pristine for a short period. After a while, that finish begins to wear off and, depending on personal preference, can be unsightly. Titanium Carbide Vapor goes through an improved heat-treated binding process. Titleist says this process will help provide improved durability and keep these wedges in top-looking shape for longer.
These heads come with a Dynamic Gold Onyx S200 shaft and a Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 grip for the finishing touches. As you probably guessed, the grip is black with blacked-out Vokey-branded BV wings creating a look that would even thrill the Dark Knight.
Regarding options, and let’s face it nobody does wedge options quite like Vokey, all 23 lofts, bounce, and grind combinations will be able to receive the Titanium Carbide Vapor treatment via WedgeWorks. For golfers who want to avoid going the custom route, there will be 12 variations available in a standard stock build, which are listed below.
50.08F, 52.08F, 54.10S, 54.12D, 56.08.M, 56.10S
56.12D, 58.08M, 58.12D, 60,08M, 60.10S, 60.12D
For anyone interested in adding a Vokey SM9 wedge to the bag, please do yourself a favor and check out their Vokey Wedge Selector. With all those options, adding a wedge that best suits your game and normal playing conditions is vital to on-course performance.
Vokey Design SM9 Jet Black Premium wedges will be available in golf shops on March 3, 2023, with a price tag of $249.
These look great but I’d struggle with the price tag.

Same. Love the look just not sure I can pull the trigger at $250.
I’m not ready for $250 a wedge
$250 for a wedge lol
You make a fine product, Mr. Vokey, but GTFOH
Count me in on the stellar looks but out on the price tag. But holy smokes they sure do look ?
I’ll mirror the group – but those look so sweet. Blacked out with the grip and everything is just so sweet.
The awfully proud of these guys
Yes, they look good. But, no, I am not going to pay $250 for a cast wedge.
These are beauties. Black wedges I’m into.

I’m with you, Scott. Call it what you want, PVD is PVD, and doesn’t warrant a premium on an already expensive wedge.
Saying this as a fan of most things Vokey
Those look incredible, and I bet they flat out perform, but for £250 a throw? Jeez no.
Makes Artisan wedges look a little more appealing for only 80 more
An improved heat treating process? So is it like cobra DBM from a few years back or is it a new version of PVD? Or something entirely different?

Love the black finish It’s a good thing I don’t need any wedges right now.
Great looking wedge
Lol $250 for “premium” Pvd is absurd. I looked at their “standard” black head when I went for a fitting a few weeks ago and while they are a great feeling wedge, for me the jaws black plasma raw were more forgiving

Sweet looking. I saved $100 a bought a standard finish.
Good write up @ddec. Appreciate the info here.
Oh it’s awesome for sure. Loved the blacked out look. But for the price point ?
Lots of good wedges out there ????
I adore companies searching for ways to keep those black color wedges retaining their color. I for one do not like the look when the finish starts to wear off. It is a tough pill to swallow at that cost for those having 3-4 wedges in the bag.
Great article. That’s a beautiful wedge but man that’s a pretty Penny.
Great looking wedge but $250 is way to high.
I agree the $250 is a little pricey for me, but darn that’s sexy.

Would you pay 250 for a forged wedge?
This is in sugar daddy wedge territory, also not sure why you would have two black options with one of them being obviously inferior to the other.
Thanks for the info @ddec – I love the Raw finish on my Vokeys so not interested in changing, but I think that this finish looks sharp
Gorgeous wedges. Still leanin Mizuno tho
Love the finish but a couple of those are going to add up ?.
Jet black is awesome. $250 is not.
250 is a little steep for a wedge off the rack. I love Vokey wedges, the blacked out looks. But think its too pricey for the average golfer.
So is anyone going to fork over the up charge for this thing?

I will not.
Good article on a nice looking wedge. Fortunately I know the value of a dollar in my own. golf game. At $250, this club is not for me.
