TaylorMade has believed that the TP5/TP5x golf ball is the most complete golf ball on the market since its introduction in 2017. The company has traditionally released an updated version of this line every two years, each with some improvements. In 2019, the Speed-Layer system was brought to the masses to boost speed, and in 2021, a new Tour Flight Dimple pattern was added to improve aerodynamics and performance in windy conditions. With three years since the last version, TaylorMade has been working to ensure that the 2024 iteration will be the most significant update yet. Today, the wait is finally over as TaylorMade unveils their newest TP5 and TP5x golf balls.
It’s worth noting that TaylorMade has invested over $100 million into their golf ball category this year. They strive to ensure that every aspect of the golf ball meets their high standards and qualities. This is a significant venture, representing their largest investment as an organization in the last five years. This has allowed TaylorMade to become one of the few companies that make cast urethane golf balls while being 100% vertically integrated. It also means some big things are coming on the horizon for TaylorMade in this category.
Since the wait for this release extended an extra year, it allowed TaylorMade to have this product in the prototype stage for a more extended period than usual. With that being the case, these new TP5 golf balls are the company’s most prototype-tested product they has ever made. Ready to hear about the results of all this testing? Let’s get to it.
“Our learnings from countless player and Tour tests show that golfers, unsurprisingly, favor a softer, more muted sound with added distance. Historically, the challenge has been the inability to improve one without negatively impacting the other. With this understanding, we’ve evolved our golf ball design process by uniquely decoupling feel and speed through material advancement, a complete departure from the conventional. The material-level advancement positions our TP5/TP5x family as having the best feel in the industry with faster constructions.”
– Michael Fox, Senior Director of Product Creation, Golf Balls –
The 2024 TaylorMade TP5 and TP5x golf balls focus on delivering both speed and a soft feel. Previously, achieving these qualities in a golf ball has been difficult. Engineers could increase compression to make a ball faster, but that also meant negatively affecting its sound and feel. Alternatively, the core could be softened to create a more muted ball, but this would sacrifice distance for some golfers. TaylorMade’s new TP5 balls address this issue by using a new technology called Speed Wrapped Core. Speed Wrapped technology allows the company to increase ball speeds while maintaining the softness of the golf ball. This new core material is less dense, which is essential for controlling sound without having that inverse effect on speed. It is made of a unique material that has never been used before in the golf industry, but it works similarly to the Speed Foam used in their p790 irons.
TaylorMade has incorporated Speed Foam in the hollow body of the p790 irons to regulate sound and enable a thinner face, resulting in faster and more pleasant performance. If you have ever compared a completely hollow iron with one that uses SpeedFoam, you would have noticed that the latter produces less noise. To ensure the same softness and sound control, the new TP5 golf balls utilize a similar method to create a quieter, less clicky sound. Sound plays a significant role in the overall feel of the golf ball.
Even with the presence of the Speed Wrapped Core, this line continues to be a 5-layer golf ball. There were times in the past when the differences between layers were minimal in terms of compression, and that all changed with the new TP5 series. These new balls offer the highest speed gradient that TaylorMade has ever had in a golf ball, which means that this golf ball can uniquely react depending on the type of shot being played. When teeing it up with a driver, the highest swing speed club in the bag, golfers can activate a low 5-compression core, which will help deliver high launch and low spin. As players get closer to the green and start with their wedges, only the two outer layers come into play: A firmer mantle and a soft cast urethane cover, leading to more spin control. According to TaylorMade, the new TP5 golf balls are remarkably different from their predecessors when it comes to iron play. In fact, they claim that it is one of the longest iron-performing golf balls they have ever produced.
Are You a TP5 or TP5x Golfer?
Below is a quick breakdown of each golf ball and the type of player it best suits. However, if you are still deciding which ball to purchase while you are at the store, TaylorMade has devised a simple and speedy solution. Located on every TP5 golf ball box’s cover is a QR code that leads to a ball recommendation tool. Answer twelve relevant questions and TaylorMade will suggest the TP5 golf ball that best matches your playing style.
2024 TaylorMade TP5
Golfers seeking a golf ball with superior control around the green and increased spin on wedge shots should find the TP5 an ideal option. Compared to the TP5x, it boasts a softer feel and a marginally higher ball flight. TaylorMade has reduced the driver spin in contrast to the previous generation while still ensuring exceptional greenside performance. TP5 will also offer the highest amount of iron spin within the lineup.
2024 TaylorMade TP5x
Golfers prioritizing longer distances and higher speeds will appreciate the TP5x golf ball from TaylorMade, as it is their fastest 5-layer tour ball. The TP5x reduces spin on driver, iron, and wedge shots while maintaining a flatter, penetrating trajectory. As expected, TP5x will have a firmer feel than that of TP5.
2024 TaylorMade TP5 and TP5X Pix
TaylorMade collaborated with Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood to help revamp the design of their TP5/TP5x Pix golf balls. The previous “motion triangle” graphic has been replaced with a “motion diamond” shape, resulting in more orange closer to the centerline and black color further away. The change may seem subtle, but it improves the colors’ contrast and increases the ClearPath Alignment’s visibility, which will help provide more feedback to golfers when rolling putts.
The Details
Starting today, the new 2024 TaylorMade TP5, TP5x, and Pix editions are available in stores for $54.99. TP5 and TP5x are available in both white and yellow. More information on the latest TP5 golf balls is available at www.taylormadegolf.com.

I’ve tested them pretty extensively on that type of shot and am not seeing that kind of 1k spin separation with the other new offerings. Will always be player dependant, but I haven’t seen that kind of extreme.

Yeah, I’m definitely curious to get back out there to the Sim on Monday. I know on some of my full iron shots there were some pretty big disparities and strike quality had a lot to do with it, so I definitely think some of the stuff in my data is colored by how rusty my game is right now. And the general mid handicap levelness of it all. ?
I feel like it’s going to take multiple visits to verify data and find the absolute best ball for me for 2024. But all that sounds really fun and I’m gonna love doing it

This was the 50y test for me on monitor. Course is always a little different than indoors, but I think I was pretty honest about them on all that in my video.
$100M investment in the ball category is definitely noteworthy! I’d be interested in seeing how the new TP5 compares to the previous version.

A big portion of that went into buying S. Korean factory.
And then there’s this:

Played the ‘21 TP5x late last year and they suited my game well. Longer and straighter than the QStar Tour and Bridgestone e12. The ‘21s also feel better than my current favorite, the AVX. I may give the 2024 TP5x a long audition.
Nice writeup @ddec. $100,000,000 is a huge investment. And kudos to TM for cross marketing their irons in the golf ball tech explanation.

The chrome tour x is so good I’ll be interested which TM ball stacks up against it.

It’s interesting to me that his PW and iron ball speeds were faster in comparison but not driver. In my testing, I saw the biggest separation in speed with irons (around 2mph) but it was also the fastest with driver (less than 1mph). I do remember him living on the heel in that vid and it looks like the 5x was furthest in. Wonder if that’s the difference.

Yeah wasn’t his best sample with driver but none of us are perfect.
I still find the sound and feel takes between them interesting. Mikey with a good separation on perceiving them, and I think that’s going to be an increasingly important skill as tech moves forward and materials and processes continue to change traditional feedback.

Agree. It was the very first thing I picked up on when testing myself as well. The 5x has a very unique feel and sound profile this year. It is definitely more pronounced indoors than it is outdoors but I think it’s going to be polarizing for some. I like it off irons, not crazy about it off wedges, off putter feels good, and the feel and sound off driver is phenomenal.
So–full disclaimer here–I am not an official tester of the TP balls for THP—However as mentioned, i did come into possession of a 2024 TP5 via nefarious, potentially even criminal means.
So far my iron testing has been quite good with the TP5, which oddly i find is the higher launching and spinning ball of the TP family (kinda the inverse of the other guys). But as i’ve learned….i’m not sure how much i will really see differences on like, 5 and 7 irons. That being said, it is 1-2yds longer for me on average than most other balls, especially the 2023 collection. But i can’t really put my finger on why , as spin and launch are about the same as others
Now, if you have followed my ball reviews, you will recall that while i can strike the ball as pure as the day is long–i struggle to elevate longer clubs like driving irons and 3-woods, resulting in a hilarious 11-12 degree launch angle on occasion with 3 woods. You may also recall that in my testing , the Chrome Tour X has been a revelation for me in this department, and i’ve seen 7-10 yard gains in peak distance with my 3 wood due to 1-1.5 degree better launch on well struck balls
Now, much like in Rocky 3….has the CTx been beating formidable opponents? Or carefully selected 2023 patsies to continue it’s reign as champion? I had never put it head to head with the TP5. And after several press conferences where the TP5 showed up and said “hey woman, why don’t you come to my apartment later and spent the night with a real ball” …..i finally caved and gave it it’s title bout
So…..today i hit 50 balls each with 3-wood. TP5 versus CTx in a mano a mano showdown. I discarded some poor swings (note, making 100 3-wood swings in a row generally results in a few bad ones). So i had to tabulate the results a little manually……but MAN, the TP5 held it’s own!!!!
ADMITTEDLY—-My best swings of the day were with the TP5—i know this. And this skewed the numbers a bit. But i still averaged a bit better launch and distance
TP5 came in at ~ 257 average total distance, 12.9 degrees launch and 2300rpm
CTx came in at ~ 255 average, 12.8 launch and 2400 rpm
My 3 longest hits of the day were with the Tp5 —all of them >270 but not as long as the 277 bomb i hit with the CTx the other day.
I do think that the balls are about the same. I definitely made my best swings today with the TP5.
That being said, the CTx was the best ball i tested in 2024 so far for my game . So that is still saying something

Kinda headscratching in the marketing being done by TM on the ball samples. If people are buying TP5/x balls, they’re already a customer. Would you not want to try and convert someone with a sample in order to take away from another company’s market share?
I find that just a bit odd.

I played the 5x today and it did everything I could have asked of it. Long and straight off the tee. Was good off irons when I wasn’t making hosel contact and spun well with the wedges.

Haven’t had a TM fitting event at my course yet, I’ll be curious what they do.
I played the TP5x some today, even though I said on my original video I had wished I’d played the TP5 more in testing. It was good.
Switched to TP5 for the last couple holes and went birdie, birdie, and had this one on the last

that had to be no more than an inch from an ace. Honestly not sure how it didn’t go in. Think it went right over the cup.
Which would have been cool because I broke my life long HIO drought on that hole with the 2019 TP5. Which I didn’t actually play anymore at that point but my ball was scuffed and it’s what I had available in the recesses of my bag. And went birdie, ace with it.
So fun stuff out there with it today. I kind of like the higher flight off TP5 for me and it’s been good off the tee.

Exactly
Picked up a box of TP5x a few days ago. Admittedly, I have not gamed a Taylormade golf ball since the InerGel came out circa 1999. I’m not sure I could give a valid reason as to my “why”, but was just never interested for some reason. Looking forward to getting out, hopefully this weekend, and playing a couple rounds with the TP5x (and might pick up a box of TP5, for comparison, when In OKC tomorrow).
So I grabbed both 2021 and 2024 Tp5x and started to bounce them on a wedge to see if they felt different and the newer one felt slightly softer. The odd part is I could keep the 2024 bouncing on the wedge and the 2021 would only last a few bounces before it would deflect off in one direction or the other. I tried this several times with the same results each time. I wonder if the newer ball was designed to have more bite. I then dropped both on the cement floor several times at the same time from the same height and the newer one will start bouncing faster and get several more bounces in before coming to a complete stop compared to the old model.
Hello – Does anyone know the compression on the 2024 versions? Thank you

So apparently you have to scan the QR code on the postcard and it will tell you which DSG or GG in your area will have the samples.
No real directions to indicate that on the card.
I went to my local DSG and soon as I saw the associates face I knew they didn’t have any.
Was told that I was the 15th person he turned away already and explained the QR method of finding out where I could get them.
His words “Yeah, not real clear on the postcard”…
Played the TP5x pix today. I can’t think of anything to complain about. It was long and consistent off the tee. Sounds great off the face of Qi-10 Driver.
I like the ballflight off irons and it tends to drop and stop quickly when hitting into greens.
I like the feel and spin I’m getting in the short game. And using the clear path tech on the green is helping me. I’m not a line on a ball kinda guy (it messes with my head) but lining up a big “blank” stripe in the middle of the diamonds just works for me for some reason.

They’re same as last version on that according to TM.
Played another nine with the TP5x Pix yesterday. The ball has held up well, even after squaring up a tree more squarely than I’ve ever squared up anything in my life. Distance and feel has been good, but I’ve really enjoyed putting with this ball more than anything. Feel has been better than I anticipated and have not found it “too clicky” or harsh. It’s been my first time using a Pix ball, but it’s worked very well for my eye. While I enjoy the Pix for putting, I’ve appreciated that the design isn’t as “in your face” as some others and honestly rarely grabs my attention until I want to utilize it. This may seem silly, but I struggle with attention and quieting my mind, so this is something unexpected that has become a draw.

Agree on the durability yesterday I was in jail on the right side and had to trying to hit a 160y low runner. Shot was great, if it would have been 2 inches more right. Instead I scraped across the edge of a tree 10ft in front of me. I expect to have to take that ball out of play with only 3 holes left but when I got to it and inspected it was good as new.
Zero damage thru 18 yesterday. I’ll put the same ball back in play for my next round this week.

There’s something about it that seems to suit me. Like it just sits in the right launch and spin window.
I played the TP5 yesterday and was impressed with the durability compared to previous models. Played the same ball all 18 holes with a couple of bunker shots mixed in and the ball showed very little wear.
Weather is still not ideal for playing just yet and the course conditions are soft and slow so I don’t put much into the distances and spin on the greens just yet. I liked the feel and was getting solid short game performance. I did place my order for TP5x balls for the season as I prefer a slightly firmer feel and a little less spin off of my irons.
I convinced myself to go ahead and order the buy 3 get 1 on the “My symbol” 5x’s. But I’m a little sad that I can’t just upload a picture of a light post for ‘My Symbol’.
I’d rather have PIX anyway tbh so I’ll just wait and hope they hit a buy 3 sale.
Bored at work so here’s a PIX edit. This slow motion one shows the Clearpath tech a little better
