When the goal is light weight, the stand bag market could be an arms race in losing ounces. Taking a different approach with the HyperLite Zero and instead of focusing on creating the lightest weight possible, Callaway has focused on creating the gold standard in light weight carry bags available.
So what is new? Well, pretty much everything. For those that have heard me rant about golf bag design and innovation, you know where I stand on this. So little headway was made for a number of years and far too many golfers got sucked into choosing their bag strictly based on color, rather than performance. Speaking of functionality, let’s dive into some of the tech.
The Callaway HyperLite Zero features something called SHAFT SHIELD. What is it? Well, pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Callaway has created a rubber overmold to take the place of the mesh commonly found on other stand bags. Testing showed that the typical mesh created wear spots on shafts over time, so Callaway put this proprietary overmold in place to solve this problem. A byproduct of the design is that by eliminating that mesh material, the bag is a bit more open at the top, allowing for less rubbing or snagging.
Two areas that should stand out almost immediately to golfers are about comfort for those that walk. Even if you are not a walker, but merely carry your clubs from car to club, you will notice a difference. The Callaway HyperLite Zero has added Anatomic Shoulder Straps to allow for a better feeling carry through the shoulders and neck. Adding to this, is the Extended Comfort Hip Pad. Most companies speak of padding where the bag hits your hip while carrying, however, the HyperLite Zero has gone a step further. Their padding is larger than most, but also has a closed Cell foam that won’t be worn-in like your favorite seat on the sofa after a few months.
Finally, we want to touch on the legs. After all, this is a stand bag and a light one at that. The Callaway HyperLite Zero uses carbon fiber on the legs to reduce weight and offer durability. In using this bag for the better part of the last month, the leg design hasn’t given us a single issue. No tangle. No stand up and have them not open. And most importantly to us, no what we call, “the give”. When your bag is a bit heavy and the legs start sliding out from under the bag.
With performance and features covered, let’s talk a little about actual use of the Callaway HyperLite Zero. First thing that has to be mentioned here is the perfectly positioned cell phone pocket. No need to use the valuables pouch and have to zip or unzip to grab your phone, the pocket is accessible as you carry. Next, the pockets themselves are larger than expected when you look at the bag. To test this out, we loaded it up for a recent round. Rain gear and two dozen balls on one side, gloves in the other. Keys and wallet in the valuables pouch fit perfectly along with bandaids, medicine, etc. Pretty much everything fit that we would want or need to bring with room to spare, which was surprising considering the overall size of the bag.
So what is missing? With every bag we have tried, there has always been some drawbacks, even if they are filled with positives. In this instance, not sure we have found any as of yet. Over the course of the year, we will update the THP Forum with more usage as we continue to check on durability.
Color options are aplenty with 12 different options and two that stood out immediately for those that don’t want your typical black or navy. First is The Paradym which is sharp in person. The colors are bold enough to pop, but subdued enough to not look out of place. The other is the Black/White/Sage which is a fairly muted look, but very different from what you see normally at the course or range. So which one would you pick?
- Black
- Black Camo
- Red/White/Navy/USA
- Graphite
- Royal / White
- Fire / Black
- Flo Yellow / Navy
- Navy
- Black / White / Sage
- Hunter / White
- White / Navy
- Paradym
The Callaway HyperLite Zero golf bags will hit stores today and have a retail price of $279.00.

I’ve made my decision.
I will admit nothing ?
First thing I did when my bag got here was take some measurements that are important to me.
Weight of the bag with straps and rain hood

Weight of the bag with straps, no rain hood

Weight of the bag with no straps or rain hood (good for pushcart)

The bag comes in 13.4 oz heavier with straps and no rain hood than my old bag.
Not much of a chance to get the bag loaded up and on course for a while around here. ?

The G brings that bag up a notch or 10
Got out for 9 this aft and wanted to walk with the new Hyperlite zero to try it out. The course we played is very hilly not the easiest of walks. Since having the Hyperlite zero I am really liking the ease of taking it places. Loading and unloading in the car is a breeze and taking the whole bag to the range from the cart is nice so I can switch out my clubs while warming up.
I used phone pocket for my range finder which worked out well. The Hyperlite zero was great to walk with. I could use just a single strap or both and I found myself using the carry handle a few times on shorter moves. The weight is fantastic and the bag is comfortable. In looking at the pics I need to better adjust the left side strap I see lol.
I would not hesitate to carry again with how good this bag worked.

I am a little bummed it comes in over 3 pounds. I obviously need the straps but don’t usually carry the rain cover. I am still going to give it a look. The bag I need to replace because it is falling apart is an old Sun Mountain Swift which claims to be 2.5 pounds although I have never put it on the scale.
I carried again for a few holes earlier this week and made a point to use the cell phone pocket this time. Gotta say that is my only complaint of the bag. The pocket is too small/tight in my opinion. I have an iPhone 14 pro with a case and pop socket and it was a pain to get it in and out of there. It was a little easier if I took my glove off, but I only do that on the green typically.

The bag I compared it to was the SM 2.5+, at 2lbs 14.4 oz without the rain cover. I will say that the Hyper Lite Zero seems more sturdy. It has larger slots for the clubs, the pockets are larger for accessories and water bottles, the valuables pocket has a clip in there for your keys. Like @AT_CG said on Off Course with @Canadan, they arent looking to be the lightest bag out there, but they want to be the best lightweight bag. This year will be a great test of the bag’s features.
I really am intrigued by the
hyperLite Zero bag. Put together really well. Light and seem to have the space to carry all my gear. The green color way looks really good on @Saywhat4412 Grandaddy bag!!!

I steered away from the 2.5+ because I thought it looked a bit flimsy. I generally don’t mind a bit smaller bag I am fine with an 8” opening but I will definitely look at this. I did pick up one of their Par 3 bags that was on sale for $100 bucks and is under 3 pounds. It is a bit small if I am on a cart though.
I’m newly rocking last years Odyssey version. My wife’s 2023 in the sage color should arrive on Thursday. Interested in comparing them.

I will say, this bag does not seem like it is lightweight until you pick it up. Build quality is excellent and features are there. Definitely take a look for yourself as these should be in stores soon to assess for yourself, but for golfers who carry this should be on your short list (I would say at the top, but I haven’t looked at other options).
This bag is really making me a believer of just having a light weight stand bag at all times. The HL Zero holds everything i need and the best part is it is so easy to move around. No issues so far with twisting while using it in a cart. Going to try and get a walking round in with the pushcart next weekend to test out.

I need to go and check these out in store if they have them.
Used this on my clicgear 8.0 with the Cozy attachment and it worked like a charm. One thing I would like to add… played in some weather conditions and had Travis Mathew Cloud pullover and a rain jacket in the apparel pocket and they both fit in there with the rain hood.
Would not have imagined with a 3lb bag that I could have fit all that in there.
Surprised my wife with her full set yesterday, as a combined early birthday/valentines gift. She likes the clubs, but has been crushing hard on the bag. Walked another 9 this aft and carried again. Having the hyper light just makes this decision easy when playing 9. I am fighting with the straps a bit getting them perfect. I had the bag higher up this time and it was more comfortable. I do like just grabbing it and will carry it with a single side of the strapping system which is so easy to do.

Lightweight bags usually have a tight top. But this is full size, I carried around 16 clubs with zero issues including a supersrtoke grip.
If I had to guess with the features and quality of this bag the weight, I would say minimum 4.5lbs. The fact they shaved that much weight and kept the quality up…. super impressive. And then add in all the color options and this is my only recommendation for people who like to carry.
Bag is packed up and ready to roll. Seems appropriate to have the GOAT Cup logo on it heading to Ballyhack.
