Although you likely already knew that Callaway was the number one driver in golf for 2023, you may not have realized they achieved that same ranking in fairway woods with their Paradym lineup as well. As such, the task to keep pushing the envelope can be a daunting one because there is a fine line of firepower and playability that has to be walked.
Last time around, it was done via the integration of Forged Carbon, but this time things are being kicked up a notch not only in terms of those materials, but also the entire concept of what a face design in a fairway can be.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Fairways
If you have read our release on the Ai Smoke drivers from Callaway, then you’ll not be surprised when we tell you that the fairway woods are also not simply a sequel. Just because they carry the Paradym name on them doesn’t mean there aren’t some significant changes, in fact, Ai Smart Face might be the most significant change we have seen from Callaway in their AI era.
One thing you absolutely have to admire about the companies who are creating the best fairway woods out there is that they all treat them as their own thing. Gone and dead are the days of just trying to take what you put into the driver designs and put it into fairways. A good example of that is when Callaway took their newly created AI “Swing Code” which utilizes “Real Player Swing Dynamics” of 250,000+ recorded swings from fitting centers and studios to create 80,000 lines of custom code and applied it to their fairway designs.
That code is the key to the creation of Callaway’s new “Ai Smart Face” which uses radically outside the box topographic designs created for each model uniquely using the real swing and path tendencies of actual golfers as opposed to a perfect path robot. What they saw immediately was that although the specific traits like speed, path, and face angle were as expected for each model, the strike locations for golfers in fairway woods were drastically different than with driver.
Overall, strikes were much lower on the face according to the data, which makes sense as most amateurs tend to get steep with fairway woods. This combined with the various swing traits are what lead to the implementation of four different fairway heads (MAX, MAX D, MAX FAST, and Triple Diamond) for the Ai Smoke release, each with an Ai Smart Face to optimize the clubhead for the needs of that golfer type.
However, there are still other design changes worth noting. Namely, the implementation of Forged Carbon in the Paradym fairways was a huge catalyst to their success in what it allowed for discretionary weight shifting in the design. One thing that Callaway knew could take things even further was if they could do away with the two support structures on the sole of the fairway between the Forged Carbon. They turned to their dedicated “Composite Engineering Team” and found a solution with a Forged Carbon application and chassis that no longer needs those beams for support.
That change freed up 24 grams of weight, of which 12g was moved back to increase launch and the other 12g shifted to the Tungsten Speed Cartridge which was the unsung hero of the Paradym release. That added weight forward has made for higher launch with less spin, according to Callaway. Everything adds up to the belief that the Paradym Ai Smoke fairways are still incredibly long, but are now also more accurate downrange than ever.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke MAX Fairways
The flagship design which the biggest number of golfers should end up in, the MAX is the do it all offering in the lineup. It is aimed at the golfer with mid-speed with a moderately down, but not crazy, angle of attack combined with slightly out-to-in swing path. The Ai Smart Face is tuned also for a somewhat consistent strike pattern that ranges from the low heel to high on the toe.
Callaway is making the MAX model available in 3, 3HL, 5, 7, 9, 11, and also Heavenwood options.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke MAX D
Those looking for a true draw designed fairway should look this way as the MAX D checks that box. The swing code implementation here is the golfer who has a strike pattern all the way from heel to toe with most occurring low on the face. Typically, the slower speed player has a definite out-to-in swing path and battles a hard downward attack angle and open face at impact.
The MAX D will be offered in 3, 3HL, 5, and 7 wood models.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke MAX FAST Fairway
As with the drivers, it is nice to see Callaway essentially bring what has been the STAR release that occurs later in the year out at the same time as the main lineup. That is precisely the target of the MAX FAST which aims at golfers who fight the same strike tendencies as the MAX D but need more speed than natural draw bias.
The MAX FAST will come in 3, 5, 7, and 9 wood options.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Fairway
Don’t worry, Callaway isn’t about to have a fairway release without the Triple Diamond. Geared at the player who finds the center of their fairway woods most of the time at higher swing speeds and a neutral path, this remains the “workable” and “players” fairway of the bunch. It is important to note, that because of the smaller shape and deeper face, the sole of the Triple Diamond is not Forged Composite like the others, but instead steel. It does still utilize the Triaxial Carbon crown, however.
The Triple Diamond will be offered in 3, 5, and 7 wood models.
The Details
While all initial eyes will be on the new drivers to see if they can deliver on surpassing what was the most successful release of 2023, they will soon fall to these Paradym Ai Smoke fairways in a very similar fashion. There is a lot to live up to, but if the Ai Smart Face implementation delivers, then Callaway might not just maintain their #1 played tally but extend it.
Standard shaft options will consist of the Mitsubishi Eldio and Tensei Silver for the MAX FAST drivers as well as the Mitsubishi Tensei AV Series Blue, Project X Cypher 2.0, and Project X Denali Black for the rest of the clubheads. The entire lineup will be available for pre-sale on 1/14/24 with product hitting retail on 1/26/24 and will be priced at $349.99.
So, the Smoke TD is the best 3w I’ve ever played. It’s not only a beast off the tee, it is easy to hit off the turn as well. I haven’t hit a 3w this consistently ever. One thing that stands out is the ball flight. It’s a lower, more piercing flight than I’ve had before and it doesn’t affect its playability off the turf.

I have mentioned it before, but this is why I went D/5W up top instead of D/3W. If I need a safe tee shot under 250, the 5W is just a better play for me. The arccos stats are of my new MaxD 5W versus my Speedzone Big Tour 3W. Included Driver to show that I was really gaining nothing with a 3W except maybe the worst driver shots were worse than my bad 3W shots.

i can’t say it enough , but i love my Ai Smoke Max heavenwood more and more each time i pull it out of the bag
I got out yesterday for my first round of the year. I hit the Smoke Max D 3HL fairly well. I think I’m going to like it.
I think the most apparent thing to me so far this year since putting the Max 5W and HW in the bags, is just how much easier to hit well the HW is for me.
Indoors still, but it is crazy how much more success I have with the HW, in terms of quality contact. On a sim, or at the range so far, just so so easy to hit and get good results
Just a small sample, from a guy who still isn’t hitting anything great:

Lesson on Wednesday, to try and figure some things out. I figure after the grip change I did, that I am down 20-30 yards of carry on average…. and I am not a fan lol.
I’m carrying a new Ai Smoke MAX 15* 3wd this year and couldn’t be happier. This is the longest 3wd I’ve ever played. I hadn’t carried a 3wd in a couple years so I had to get in a happy place with ball position and tempo. I’m there, and I’m very happy with this club!
@brians and @BigMac just wanted to let you both know that I was able to get out on the course Saturday and got to hit a few with the Max D 3HL. It was a long off season for me and I was anxious to get the Max D into play. The two of you were a large reason why I considered this club. I followed what you had written here about your experiences with the AI Smoke FWs from your time at the GD and beyond. So, thanks. To me, the reviews from forum members are very important. You both have done well with you reviews here. Although the swing was definitely off from the long off season , the results were promising. I’m looking forward to seeing the full potential of this club for me. I’ll keep posting my observations here.

That is great to hear. My first round out after the winter, I definitely chalked up to operator error. Now, the HL is launching exactly like it’s supposed to. Consistently.

We weren’t exactly getting the HL, but the distance and direction were very good. It was a little low launching  but that’s due the off season rust.
Hit the HW for the first time yesterday. Course conditions were tough. Long and tough course, cold and very windy.
First impression is that I hit it well but not sure it is better than the last year Paradym model which I liked. I am not sure why I don’t have that club now but for some reason I was thinking about just going to a 7wd instead. Anyway since I only had one round with it and maybe hit it like 3 times I wouldn’t say I can give a review on it yet but so far I do like it and it will be in the bag right next to last years Paradym 3HL.
More on it later when I get time to hit it more.
In my lesson working with 5W and Heavenwood, do you think I could make decent contact when I was completely gassed? Goodness no, that was pretty humbling.
It was neat getting to explain the HW though, and how it differed from the 7W when talking about it with the instructor.
Hopefully grabbed a bit of info in that lesson that helps me be more successful overall with both clubs once I get on the course!
Still heavily pondering a heavenwood or 7w. Has anyone compared the two on a monitor?
I’m starting to get used to the Max D 3HL and 7W. They are so easy to hit.

I’m getting max distance for me from the 3HL. That’s remarkable because it’s so early in the season for me.
First opportunities to hit the 5W and HW this year yesterday.
5W off the first tee, aimed left side, ball went straight at where I was aimed, with perhaps the most hesitant swing I have ever had off a first tee. Loved what I saw from that ball flight, piercing shot into the wind, straight up a hill.
Off the fairway, with both the 5W and HW, is definitely a work in progress, after putting a couple very haphazard swings on the ball. Early season topping of fairway woods…. thats pretty typical for me to be honest.
The biggest thing with the HW for me, is really recognizing if the ball was hit well by the sound that comes from it. I didn’t get that at all yesterday, but that was all on searching for a swing in the cold and wind.
Weirdly I wouldn’t have characterized myself as a person who would really notice the sound as much as I have this year. Heavenwood definitely has a very different sound when the ball is hit well, and it is actually something I am relying on more and more as an audible cue that I have made a good swing with good contact.
Yesterday I had a ton of fun with my TD 15*. I used it 3 times and man did this thing just flat out perform. It was very windy yesterday and this with the CTX is just a cheat code weapon. Beautiful flight and crazy far distance. On 16 it was dead into the wind and its a short par 4 at about 300yd. I hit this about 275 into the wind dead straight and made par. I should have just used this all day yesterday as I my driver was a little erratic, because of my swing.

i use a max d 3hl and a max heavenwood … slight and i mean slight draw with the 3hl and the max heavenwood is fairly straight … with my swing not too much of difference , im just thrilled that they both are long and consistently in the fairway …
ooohhh, tell me more about that Heavenwood. Have you played an HW in the past? Did it replace something other than a fairway wood in that spot? What distance do you use it for?
Range session today in preparation for a planned round soon, haven’t been able to go recently due to a change in work/sleep schedule so swing was not good today.
TD 3W still working great on good swings, but can get pretty fadey for me if I’m out in the toe. Got back to where I was expecting to be with it by the end of the session after fatigue was setting in, so definitely excited to take this onto the course and see what kind of fun I can have with it.
One thing that really strikes me with the club is ball flight. Even though it’s easier to hit lower flighted shots, can still hit some long bombs with it with a penetrating flight. I’ll probably be waiting a few months to upgrade my 5W slot to AI Smoke TD, but the temptation to buy one now is very much present. Lot of confidence to do some damage with the top of the bag.

Going 3HL – 7W has worked out well for me, since the 3HL gaps like a 4W.
At those distances I’m mostly just eating up yardage, my GIR% from 200+ is going to be very low no matter which club I’m using, so the gap between 3HL and 7W doesn’t make me feel like I’m leaving a hole. A 3HL – 5W setup would be pretty narrow gapping for the top of the bag for me, in a spot where I don’t need that kind of precision.

I woke up thinking about this shot. Confidence is so huge in golf. As I said, in years past, I wouldn’t have trusted a 215 yard carry over the junk and would have laid up and tried to get up and down. A hole or two before this, I pulled a 6i instead of 5W to try and hit a safe shot but wasn’t committed because I wanted to hit 5W. So on this hole, I went with my gut.
