It wouldn’t be a release cycle from Callaway without irons and hybrids. As a brand, they have always been incredibly successful in both categories, but under talked about is the way things have evolved to blend and provide their target audiences with options in the bag. This year with the new Paradym Ai Smoke lineup, that is no different.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Irons Review
While the Paradym Irons were a definite success for Callaway last year, this year’s iron release, though also under the Paradym umbrella, are different in a few ways. Foremost, these are not Paradym replacements, instead, they take aim at replacing the Rogue ST irons. More than that, they are implementing Ai Smart Face as well as a better overall differentiation across the three models.
Every single iron face across all three designs is using an industry first Ai Smart Face design that utilizes Callaway’s “Swing Code” that is based upon over 250,000 swings of actual golfers from fitting centers. This is such a story because it allows them to create three unique iron designs, each aimed as a unique type of golfer and the typical swing styles that they possess. In the past, these things have always been done by robots and a standard swing path, not so much a real world one.
All of that has allowed Callaway to now tweak everything via changes to the face, thanks to being able to run tens of thousands of simulations per face via AI, they can do things that were never before possible, even so far as creating what seems like multiple sweet spots across the face. In fact, there is more topography on the face than ever allowing them to really control and manipulate the iron launch and spin independent of loft.
Beyond the Ai Smart Face, there have been adjustments to lofts (weaker in two models) and adding 1/4 inch to the longer clubs in the sets. Add in a redesigned dynamic sole with pre worn leading edge similar to what we saw in the latest Apex iron release, and you have three irons aimed at the “core” golfer out there who need specific performance in a confidence inspiring package.
Paradym Ai Smoke Irons Review
The Ai Smoke is the most compact of the three irons in the lineup and though it is a modern hollow body design, it looks to be the replacement for the previous Rogue ST irons. Not only does that carry with it a confidence and pride aspect in the back with a slightly thinner sole, but it packs in all the benefits of a hollow body.
These are a distance focused iron for golfers who slot in that 135+ yard 7i range, and according to Callaway even those well beyond that range could potentially benefit from the longer distance, steeper angle of descent, and better downrange dispersion.
The Paradym Ai Smoke Irons will be available in 4-P, A, G, S.
Paradym Ai Smoke HL Irons Review
Where the Ai Smoke irons seek to hit that modern hollow cavity category, the HL are a design focused fully on creating all the launch possible. That is a reason for them being a cavity back design with moderate offset and a slightly larger overall profile. This is all about MOI and forgiveness while maximizing the carry potential.
To do this, the Ai Smart Face in the HL’s have been created with the Swing Code specifically to add launch and spin, adding 750+ RPM compared to the standard Smoke irons. On top of that, the lofts have been taken weaker (2 degrees in the 7) but that is possible thanks to the increased efficiency of the face, otherwise adding loft simply would have shortened the irons distances.
Like its Ai Smoke siblings, the Ai Smoke HL irons will be available in 4-P, A, G, S.
Paradym Ai Smoke MAX FAST Irons
Finally, the MAX FAST irons are all about speed, just as the name indicates. These are aimed at golfers with very slow swing speeds who need speed more than anything else to help optimize their potential carry. The Ai Smart Face implementation here is focused on launch and spin as well, by using the specific swing code for this type of golfer Callaway is claiming two more degrees of launch and anywhere from 500-600 RPM more spin than the HL’s.
The MAX FAST irons will be available in 5-P, A, G, S.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Hybrids
Accompanying the iron release is, of course, a full contingency of hybrid options as well. With the Paradym hybrid release we saw a much more player driven style of size profile, but like the irons, the Paradym Ai Smoke hybrids are more aimed at the more forgiving Rogue ST style. That isn’t to say that these hybrids won’t fit a wide range of golfers, as there should be something for everyone.
Just like the rest of the Paradym Ai Smoke releases, the hybrid too are showcasing the new Ai Smart Face powered by the previously discussed “swing code” with 80,000 lines of unique code that they have developed via captured amateur golf swings to be able to dial in each hybrid in the lineup to a specific audience. Don’t worry though, the Tungsten Speed Cartridge is alive and well in all three models.
Paradym Ai Smoke Hybrids
The Ai Smoke hybrid is slightly larger than the standard Paradym but maintains much of the same overall shaping. This one is aimed at players with average to higher swing speeds who want to maximize their distance and improve dispersion.
Callaway is offering the Paradym Ai Smoke hybrids in 3 through 6 options, both RH and LH.
Paradym Ai Smoke HL Hybrids
The Ai Smart Face looks to shine in the new HL model which most will classify as a more oversized type of shape. Interestingly, although the overall profile is larger, the face depth is actually shallower both to help blend with the HL irons in performance as well as simply maximizing distance and launch with tighter dispersion.
The main audience here is the more moderate swing speed golfer, though with such a wide variety of options (4 through 8, RH and LH) there is a large fitting potential.
Paradym Ai Smoke MAX FAST Hybrids
You guessed it, the MAX FAST hybrids like all their Paradym Ai Smoke counterparts are focused primarily on speed. The name of the game here is making the most forgiving Ai Smart Face possible while also creating the lightest possible setup, notably going with a fixed hosel unlike the other models. The MAX FAST is also the most shallow faced of the three, also possessing a flatter overall shape/profile which is another design trait aimed at maximizing speed.
The MAX FAST hybrids will be available in 4-8 options but are RH only.
The Details
With Ai Smart Face all over the place and a clear focus on creating irons and hybrids that blend together to give golfers not only more options in their set makeup, but options that are designed for their real world swing traits, the Paradym Ai Smoke lineup is a robust one. Sure, the drivers and fairways will collect most of the initial buzz, but the core designs present here will appeal to the average golfer extremely well.
The irons are paired with True Temper Elevate 85 and 95 shafts in steel, while the graphite options in the irons and hybrids are the Mitsubishi Eldio (Women’s), Mitsubishi Tensei Blue White (Light), and PX Cypher 2.0 (L, R, S).
Both the irons and hybrids will begin presale on 1/12/24 and hit retail 1/26/24 with the hybrids priced at $279.99 and irons $999.99 (7 Piece Steel) or $1,099.99 (7 Piece Graphite).
Gonna jump to hybrids here for a review
I have been incredibly impressed with the Smoke hybrids. I think Callaway cracked the code for amazing hybrids some time ago.
What I want
My 3h is my bomber. It pulls double duty on days when my fairway swing is crap as an off the tee option when I would otherwise hit a fairway. It is my go to club for approaches, long bombing needs and I use it to crush par 5s.
I want to see around 200 yds from my 3h (190-200) for gapping purposes.
What I got
Long, filthy bombs!

Birdie! That 3H rolls up close to the green and I am in attack mode

And… another one. Bombs for days!

A little shorter, but still in position for a par
Only hit it once at my tour event but my 3 hybrid came up big on a ridiculous tee shot water flanking both sides of the fairway. Ball landed right in the middle with a 100 yard pitch shot. Birdie narrowly missed but par was a fantastic score on this hole. It was very clutch at that moment.

My Ai Smoke 5H has been doing a lot of double duty lately. In addition to being a great club off the tee or off the deck, it’s also a really useful option for “chutting” when I’m too far off the green to use a putter. Grip down, stand tall and use a simple putting stroke, it’s almost 100% chunk-proof. I’ve come close to holing a few, and left a lot of them in easy tap-in range. My regular buddies I golf with are pretty fascinated by it.
I have a 5H coming, looking forward to the Chutting option.
I wish I had some positives. My swing is so wonky that only one good shot happened with this yesterday. I hit a mid height flippy scoop shot onto a green from about 190. Didn’t expect it to get there just didn’t want to experience the two way miss and it worked out
The work this week was trying to log yardages for the start of the season, to get my carry yardages nailed down.
Loving the consistency with the irons so far, especially in the 8/9/PW, and seeing things like a variance +/- on carry in the area of 3 yards over the course of a session. Hopefully that leads to some more informed choices out on the course, for what club to pull.
First round in the books with these irons. Wasn’t my best day but did hit some good shots. I feel like the low irons just want to go. The 5I I hit from a couple of less than stellar lies and while I didn’t hit the green on either of them, I was far closer than I had any business being given the lie and the swing I was able to put on it. Distance wise I’m still working things out, but feel like I should be in a good place pretty quickly. Smooth swings with these reward you with some great distances.
On the 11 par 3 I scoped the pin at 161, and didn’t want to overshoot the green since I had a tail wind. Pulled the 8I, which used to be 150 club. Put a good smooth swing on it and landed just past pin hit that bounced once and sat in the rough. Almost jarred a PW into the wind on 18 from the rough. Landed 6 inches from the hole and rolled out a bit for a makable 2 putt.
I think I’m gaining more as I progress through the set, with the wedges being close-ish to what I normally expect, but need some more time to get them completely dialed in. Planning on getting these back out this week for some range time and hopefully a round before the weekend.
I was just in the basement taking some practice swings between calls and had one more thing that I forgot to mention. These irons look great for how much tech is packed into them. Sitting behind the ball they look just as good to me as my Apex 21 irons profile wise. At my fitting we moved around between some smaller/player profiles and these didn’t stick out negatively to me at all in comparison (there were definitely others that did). I don’t know what the exact offset difference is to my previous irons but there was no issue there when I put them in play.
They also look great in the bag. I wasn’t sold on the badging when these first came out but in hand it looks sharp. I’d have zero issues recommending these irons to anyone. I think they could fit a ton of different skill levels while still being aesthetically pleasing.
The AI Smoke 3 Hybrid is just silly. Absolutely silly. Easy to hit. And. Go. Far.

…I just thought to myself “swing like you’re in a fairway bunker” and the results were there but I know that’s not sustainable long term. I hit an all world fairway bunker shot that @BigMac witnessed and it flew every bit of 180…

You absolutely smoked that bunker shot, it was so cool to watch and hear!
So I wanted to take time and digest what I experienced on the course with these irons. The two above quoted posts I still stand by. The performance and feel of these irons are impressive. They check the looks department but I’m pausing a bit because some turf interaction I experienced this past weekend is bugging me. Coming from the 921 Forged the soles “cut” through the turf through impact and with these I got a lot of a the club wanting to stop through impact and really found myself having to work moving it through. I did experience some of this on my range session here locally but I chalked it up to “range conditions” and set that thought aside.
The courses I played in AZ this weekend were pristine and gave me great lies to judge the sole/turf interaction. Now let me say the positive thoughts of feel and performance were there. The only issue I had was that decent to great shots were not as frequent as I wanted or needed. I will be the first to admit I’m a mediocre iron player at best, but the results after round one left me scratching my head a bit. So much that I asked @echico to hit my 7i on the range and give me his thoughts. He provided the similar feedback to what I was experiencing. He felt the club just wanted to stop at impact and you had to work a bit to get it though. Thinking back the good to great shots i hit this weekend, those swings were a result of me “picking” the ball through impact and trying to take minimal divots. I just thought to myself “swing like you’re in a fairway bunker” and the results were there but I know that’s not sustainable long term. I hit an all world fairway bunker shot that @BigMac witnessed and it flew every bit of 180.
I’m not giving up yet and I want to play these irons here at home on courses I know to get more feedback, but I wanted to give an honest assessment, good and bad, based on my experiences so far. I am not sure if these irons are the best fit for me based on how I deliver the club to the ball, but I’m not giving up yet bc the shaft and head combo gives me some amazing results when I catch these at or near center.
Fantastic review Mike. Well thought out! The “picking” of the ball I get. I found I can take normal divots but I really do have to focus on the ball first contact. Did you try adjusting your setup position with the ball to encourage the strikes that worked better with your normal swing?

During the rounds I just played every shot pretty much middle of the stance and didn’t want to “grind too much” as I was on vacation and wanted to enjoy the round as much as I could.
On the range I moved the ball a little forward and back. I really didn’t see the differences and a little more forward allowed me to “pick” the ball cleaner than moving it back in my stance. Like I said, irons are the weakest part of my game, but I know enough about my swing where I can provide some decent feedback where turf interaction is concerned. I have not played a lot of golf so far and that is why I am pausing a bit and want to give these a few rounds at home to see if I can settle in before deciding on next steps.
One of the things really overlooked about these irons is the price point. I know we don’t always discuss price points, but $1000 for a set of irons as good as these is amazing.
A lot is said about the ai face on the drivers, but I am seeing similar things with the irons. My big miss is on the toe; I can tell I miss it out there but the results are better than I deserve. Really enjoying this set of clubs.
I really really want to play my Apex Pro/CB combo irons. They look so amazing, and feel great. And every time I pass by the 11 iron in my backup bag I want to hit it.
But these AI Smoke irons have not left my bag since they arrived. They are just that good
Struggled with the irons today. I’m sure it was just me so I’ll be hitting the range to work on them before my round this weekend. When I connect I’m seeing great distance but not the consistency I’m expecting yet.

It’s a highly underrated shot, so simple and so effective. Virtually zero chance of chunking or skulling it. You do need to practice it a bit to get the feel though, the ball comes off the face a lot hotter than it does off your putter!

My biggest doubt after yesterday is the shafts at this point. I was off yesterday and my last round. I’m sure it’s me but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t knocking around in the back of my mind. I know the potential is there. I hit some good shots with them when I do connect. It just hasn’t clicked yet, which usually only takes a round or two for me.

Got it. My issues are with the turf interaction. I love the shafts (DART Recoil 105) and they have stopped me from the ugly pull hook with a lazy or quick swing. Now I feel the head through the swing, but at impact if I am not picking it or close to taking no divot, the club just wants to stop and not keep going. It could very well be how I deliver the club at impact and need something that cuts through better, but I need more time before going down that road.

To be honest, my contact was so poor yesterday I couldn’t tell you about turf interaction. I will say my best shots have been picked, but that’s not normal for me. I usually take divots. Decent sized ones with my wedges and smaller ones with my irons. More to come for sure.

I have switched from one length to standard length a few times now. The transition isn’t that difficult. I struggle the first few rounds when I switch back and forth, but I think that happens when you just play new clubs regardless of length. I just have a better excuse than most when I struggle those first few rounds ?
The smoke irons are performing fantastic now and I have no regrets. I sold my one length irons to a friend.

Got some range time with both sets, mostly worked with 7I. Got to the point where I was making good contact with the Apex but my timing or something is still off with the Smoke. I was pretty gassed by the end though so going to keep at it.
At league last night we started on the back. 10th hole, Par 3 at about 208 yards. Super tough green to hit and stick and of course the AI Smoke 3 Hybrid landed about 8 yards short and tricked on the front edge. I’ll take that 10 out of 10 times on that hole. The hybrid is so forgiving and feels so good with the turf interaction.
The only problem it’s posing for me is the spot in my bag where I currently have a Apex UW 21degree. I love my Apex UW, it’s been a go to club for me for the last couple years. But now I’m tempted to switch to maybe a 7HL and in the AI Smoke Hybrid instead. It could help replace the 5 iron I rarely play and might fit the bag a little bit better.
Anyone ever replace a UW with one of these hybrids and not miss the UW at all?

It’s because the Smoke 7I is .5″ longer… ????
So, I have played one round since getting the HL irons and a couple of charity scrambles. The first round was a disaster to put it lightly. I struggled mightily with the irons. For some reason, my swing went to absolute garbage. Lots of thinning, tops and pulls. By the end of the front nine I was all in my head and couldn’t swing any club as a result of just trying to get through the round. Better results in the scrambles but still not hitting the clubs well on the course.
Range sessions with some videos have pointed to some serious swing flaws, some of which has been corrected. Results on the range are improving and when I hit a good shot, it is really good. OK shots are still good, I just need to avoid the straight up shanks. I think dropping 40 grams on shaft weight is taking longer to acclimate to than I anticipated. Anyone else have any experience moving to the cypher fifty shafts from a shaft in the 90-95g range?
As for the clubs themselves, through half a dozen range sessions and twice that in the garage set up, I have been pleased with a few things. The clubs really look good to my eye behind the ball. The shiny chrome seems to hold up well without excessive scuffing and scratching. I do like the sound and feel on a center strike and can tell when I’m off the toe or heel. I am getting about 500-700 additional RPM in spin up and down the set, and launch angle is generally much better than my old set, which is what I wanted. My GIR is not much better but that is a me problem and not a club problem. On the SIM driving range, after getting the swing dialed in, I have found these to be very consistent in result with right to left dispersion and distance. I just need to figure out how to get the garage swing on the course.
This and the Super Hybrid allowed me to re-find my swing. I don’t have to work hard to hit this hybrid well.
Got some work with the AI Smoke 3 hybrid in. Still wild that my 3 hybrid has been doing like 245-250. That’s just borderline ridiculous. It seems I’ve started to get better control and play a small fade which when we fitted it was aligned just slightly to a draw because I naturally fade the ball. I may start working on a draw to see if I can develop a slight one naturally. I think that would be a welcomed addition to the arsenal.
Oh hi.

Quick outdoor range session tonight and I hit the Ai Smoke 4h next to the Paradym X 4h and I got the sense of a bit of a flatter ball flight which was what I was looking for. Still plenty of height, but looked like it was coming out a bit lower and hitting that height more downrange. If that’s the case, it will be a winner for me.
I need to get outdoors so badly, and have a round scheduled tomorrow, but figure it is set to get rained out.
I want to hit irons on a course again dammit! After the lessons I need to see if I can make it translate on course, hopefully keep the dramatically improved ball flight we finally uncovered!

Had a RogueST but did not get along with it. I am still adjusting gap’s up, my 6i Ai smoke is right in line with it. Need something in between my 5w. Still on the fence on the shaft 5.5 it works but sometimes late when I want to jump on it.
Back to the irons- the 7i!
What I want
If the 8i is my go to workhorse, the 7i for me is a par 3 tee off or approach shot. My game generally isn’t where I would expect to attack a green with a 7i – I’m looking for a high launch ball into the center of the green avoiding trouble. I have enough variance generally in my swing I’d rather use this club to put me in a position to have a putter in my hand (even if it’s a long putt).
I want distance wise something around 150-155 here. I expect a bit more rollout and a bit less spin
What I got
A solid club. The 7i works for me. It’s very similar to the Paradym 7i, maybe a touch higher spinning on approach shots, but completely workable

I clubbed up here as it was going into the wind but this shot was still going 150 – precisely what I want

Lost distance here – I chunked it a bit. Still, on the dance floor and can save par!

Solid shot here but missed the green a bit and flubbed a chip. Still, this approach was a blind uphill shot to an elevated green
All in all, solid iron in its spot and I know with confidence I can get my distance target. Still working on some swing consistency here though!

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it.
Well I realized today how little I hit the 180-185 club.

I only hit the Ai-Smoke 5H once on the course today, and hit a weak chunky leaker, short. The pin was 185 yards, and I was like perfect, I just got a club for this… Not what I imagined on the range.
I hit it really well on the range, and the toe miss still went what I was expecting, more to come. But not the greatest start.
I took full advantage of the forgiveness in the Ai Smoke irons. Long par three with a very hard pin. 203 to pin on upper back tier.
Needed 190 to safely reach middle of the greens…albeit down a level or two.
I pulled my 5i and set my target on the middle. I hit it way out on the toe. But managed to still make it 187 and one the middle of the putting surface.
Thanks Ai Smoke!!!

I really really want to play my Apex Pro/CB combo irons. They look so amazing, and feel great. And every time I pass by the 11 iron in my backup bag I want to hit it.
But these AI Smoke irons have not left my bag since they arrived. They are just that good

I am seriously considering a set of AI Smoke irons but have been wondering if the extra 0.5 inch length in the mid irons will be an issue.
Have you managed to adjust to the Smoke irons extra length? Does it matter?

I typically play a 1/4 inch long anyway, so these worked for me well. I did have the shorter irons extended a little bit
I only have the Ai Smoke 4i in my bag. It’s bent weak to flow better with my Apex Pro CB set. I cannot stress enough how much fun the 4i is. I mainly use it for another tee option. It replaced a UT and I have not looked back since I added it. It’s forgiving, has a good shape to it, and is an absolute rocket.

I’ll be honest. Until you typed that, I never noticed. They feel and swing and contact like my old Paradyms. Had no idea they were slightly longer.
So I guess there was zero adjustment period at all
6i review time!
What I want
6i is the other workhorse in my bag like 8i. For whatever reason I tend to struggle with a 5i but a 6i? Flush central, baby! It’s like what the Cowboys fan base feels like after game 9 every season…

Oh, yes. Please keep this dna of the club forever Callaway!

A little fat shot. Still 155 so I’ll take it. I lost 4 yds on this chunky monkey

I did say Flush City right? (sorry not sorry Cowboys fans). Maybe a bit too much boom in this stick! Nah, who are we kidding
