It wouldn’t be a release cycle from Callaway without irons and hybrids. As a brand, they have always been incredibly successful in both categories, but under talked about is the way things have evolved to blend and provide their target audiences with options in the bag. This year with the new Paradym Ai Smoke lineup, that is no different.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Irons Review
While the Paradym Irons were a definite success for Callaway last year, this year’s iron release, though also under the Paradym umbrella, are different in a few ways. Foremost, these are not Paradym replacements, instead, they take aim at replacing the Rogue ST irons. More than that, they are implementing Ai Smart Face as well as a better overall differentiation across the three models.
Every single iron face across all three designs is using an industry first Ai Smart Face design that utilizes Callaway’s “Swing Code” that is based upon over 250,000 swings of actual golfers from fitting centers. This is such a story because it allows them to create three unique iron designs, each aimed as a unique type of golfer and the typical swing styles that they possess. In the past, these things have always been done by robots and a standard swing path, not so much a real world one.
All of that has allowed Callaway to now tweak everything via changes to the face, thanks to being able to run tens of thousands of simulations per face via AI, they can do things that were never before possible, even so far as creating what seems like multiple sweet spots across the face. In fact, there is more topography on the face than ever allowing them to really control and manipulate the iron launch and spin independent of loft.
Beyond the Ai Smart Face, there have been adjustments to lofts (weaker in two models) and adding 1/4 inch to the longer clubs in the sets. Add in a redesigned dynamic sole with pre worn leading edge similar to what we saw in the latest Apex iron release, and you have three irons aimed at the “core” golfer out there who need specific performance in a confidence inspiring package.
Paradym Ai Smoke Irons Review
The Ai Smoke is the most compact of the three irons in the lineup and though it is a modern hollow body design, it looks to be the replacement for the previous Rogue ST irons. Not only does that carry with it a confidence and pride aspect in the back with a slightly thinner sole, but it packs in all the benefits of a hollow body.
These are a distance focused iron for golfers who slot in that 135+ yard 7i range, and according to Callaway even those well beyond that range could potentially benefit from the longer distance, steeper angle of descent, and better downrange dispersion.
The Paradym Ai Smoke Irons will be available in 4-P, A, G, S.
Paradym Ai Smoke HL Irons Review
Where the Ai Smoke irons seek to hit that modern hollow cavity category, the HL are a design focused fully on creating all the launch possible. That is a reason for them being a cavity back design with moderate offset and a slightly larger overall profile. This is all about MOI and forgiveness while maximizing the carry potential.
To do this, the Ai Smart Face in the HL’s have been created with the Swing Code specifically to add launch and spin, adding 750+ RPM compared to the standard Smoke irons. On top of that, the lofts have been taken weaker (2 degrees in the 7) but that is possible thanks to the increased efficiency of the face, otherwise adding loft simply would have shortened the irons distances.
Like its Ai Smoke siblings, the Ai Smoke HL irons will be available in 4-P, A, G, S.
Paradym Ai Smoke MAX FAST Irons
Finally, the MAX FAST irons are all about speed, just as the name indicates. These are aimed at golfers with very slow swing speeds who need speed more than anything else to help optimize their potential carry. The Ai Smart Face implementation here is focused on launch and spin as well, by using the specific swing code for this type of golfer Callaway is claiming two more degrees of launch and anywhere from 500-600 RPM more spin than the HL’s.
The MAX FAST irons will be available in 5-P, A, G, S.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Hybrids
Accompanying the iron release is, of course, a full contingency of hybrid options as well. With the Paradym hybrid release we saw a much more player driven style of size profile, but like the irons, the Paradym Ai Smoke hybrids are more aimed at the more forgiving Rogue ST style. That isn’t to say that these hybrids won’t fit a wide range of golfers, as there should be something for everyone.
Just like the rest of the Paradym Ai Smoke releases, the hybrid too are showcasing the new Ai Smart Face powered by the previously discussed “swing code” with 80,000 lines of unique code that they have developed via captured amateur golf swings to be able to dial in each hybrid in the lineup to a specific audience. Don’t worry though, the Tungsten Speed Cartridge is alive and well in all three models.
Paradym Ai Smoke Hybrids
The Ai Smoke hybrid is slightly larger than the standard Paradym but maintains much of the same overall shaping. This one is aimed at players with average to higher swing speeds who want to maximize their distance and improve dispersion.
Callaway is offering the Paradym Ai Smoke hybrids in 3 through 6 options, both RH and LH.
Paradym Ai Smoke HL Hybrids
The Ai Smart Face looks to shine in the new HL model which most will classify as a more oversized type of shape. Interestingly, although the overall profile is larger, the face depth is actually shallower both to help blend with the HL irons in performance as well as simply maximizing distance and launch with tighter dispersion.
The main audience here is the more moderate swing speed golfer, though with such a wide variety of options (4 through 8, RH and LH) there is a large fitting potential.
Paradym Ai Smoke MAX FAST Hybrids
You guessed it, the MAX FAST hybrids like all their Paradym Ai Smoke counterparts are focused primarily on speed. The name of the game here is making the most forgiving Ai Smart Face possible while also creating the lightest possible setup, notably going with a fixed hosel unlike the other models. The MAX FAST is also the most shallow faced of the three, also possessing a flatter overall shape/profile which is another design trait aimed at maximizing speed.
The MAX FAST hybrids will be available in 4-8 options but are RH only.
The Details
With Ai Smart Face all over the place and a clear focus on creating irons and hybrids that blend together to give golfers not only more options in their set makeup, but options that are designed for their real world swing traits, the Paradym Ai Smoke lineup is a robust one. Sure, the drivers and fairways will collect most of the initial buzz, but the core designs present here will appeal to the average golfer extremely well.
The irons are paired with True Temper Elevate 85 and 95 shafts in steel, while the graphite options in the irons and hybrids are the Mitsubishi Eldio (Women’s), Mitsubishi Tensei Blue White (Light), and PX Cypher 2.0 (L, R, S).
Both the irons and hybrids will begin presale on 1/12/24 and hit retail 1/26/24 with the hybrids priced at $279.99 and irons $999.99 (7 Piece Steel) or $1,099.99 (7 Piece Graphite).

Just got a UPS notification that these will be delivered tomorrow. Hoping the rain holds off or I get a good enough break to to hit them before I leave town this weekend. When I talked to the rep he said that they should be done in about a week, but I didn’t expect to see them this quick.

Did you get them in today? Looking forward to your thoughts on them!
This shot with the Ai Smoke HL 8 iron on a 138 yard par 3 today. Left a 3 footer for birdie. Standing on the tee box watching it, we both thought it was going in!

Had a chance to measure and check my Smoke HL’s. I always like to check my iron sets because, I have seen some wonkiness going on in my last couple of sets I have owned. Callaway did a pretty darn good job.
Lengths were all spot on standard specs. I like now that Callaway states the finished length vs length to end of the shaft. The butt cap on the grip can vary a bit so this takes the guesswork out. I like when they say a 7i measures 37.5″ and that is what you get on the bench ruler.
Also the lofts were on spec too.
The only slight variance I found, was in the swing weight, but it was very minor (all were either on spec or within 1 pt).
They were all supposed to be D1 with the stock steel 85 shaft and I came up with:
6 – D1
7 – D1
8 – D0
9 – D0.5
AW – D0
PW – D1
SW – D1

Good to see, those specs are all damn close! Are you going to have good enough weather to get them out soon?

Doubtful and also got some work things going on. Usually most of my rounds are during the week (taking PTO to play). Could be a while. Friday might be a flier if the weather cooperates.

Need to fix that with a little lead tape…
I like my shorter clubs a bit heavier SW, 9-GW around D2-3
Delivered today. Six days almost to the hour from ordering them. Took them out and checked them out before putting them in the bag. Work has grounded me for this evening but if it’s possible I’ll sneak a range session in tomorrow before I leave for the weekend.
The specs on these are pretty spot on from what I can measure. Length wise the 7I is dead on, and the others vary a little bit in-line with the length differences in the specs. 5-PW were all right at D4 with very little variance on my budget SW scale. AW was D5, which is a-ok with me. Of course I took pictures.
Here’s a couple compared to my Black Apex 21s and my demo SMS. All 7 irons. Size compared to the Apex 21s are really close. So I’m hoping there won’t be much transition period here for me other than relearning my distances.

I will definitely be in here with updates. These went straight into the bag and I intend to play them my next round whether I see the range or not.
Anyone go with the KBS PGH shaft in the hybrid? Or the MMT ?
I’m not liking the Cypher 2.0, feels dead to me. Ball goes straight, but like a lot of PX shafts, it just feels dead!
thinking of returning for different shaft, either the KBS PGH 65 or the Tensei Blue 65, maybe MMT?

i went with the kbs hybrid prototype in an 85 gram r , my wood shafts are 65 grams and my iron shafts are 110 kbs tours … i started with the cypher 2 which was also straight but more of a ballooning flight with lack of distance… absolutely love the kbs prototype.

I have a similar experience with Cypher – hate the feel of it. I went Tensei Blue 65R and it works for me, but I really like the blue bend profile. It is an older model shaft though as far as I can tell, is not raw or Xlink.
I went with the MMT80 shaft. Really like it.

What were you seeing from the Darts that you felt weren’t the best for you? I tried some Darts but they had more of a tendency to balloon on me when we were doing the fitting, I just couldn’t control the height.

Between the two different heads I lose them right more. I can line up a little open and play a straight shot or slight fade. The AI’s are just a like more off line. Don’t lose them bad so might be an alignment adjustment. I have some new 95 Neo nippon coming to try.

I love the Nippons in mine, they just clicked for me. Hope you’ll have the same experience!
Use to play 105’s since fitted at ECPC in 18’GD but then got injured and went away from them. I can hit all the guys Apex19’s that have Nippon’s and they do what I want, just a little heavy. What Nippons you using?

I was playing Riptide CB 80 5.5 in my G410’s before, after having Tensei CK Blue 80 stiff ( became too stiff for me ) I like the Blue profile, but the Tensei blue has been hit or miss for me in the past.
I like the RT CB feel, just want a bit lighter as I’ve slowed a bit.
The 65 R interest’s me a bit.
Gonna call Cally in the morning and see what they think.?

Definitely understand that! Good news is Callaway has great no upcharge options that fit a huge range of players!

So overall are seeing a higher ball than your previous irons? Any change in the sculpt of the shot overall?
Not sure yet on height. I have only hit them on the range with range rocks and its rained all week here so I haven’t had a chance to play.
I do have a 12:00 appt today our our local sim place and I am going to do a gapping session with these and also take my G425 irons and see how they compare in distance, dispersion, spin and height. I will post back once I get all my data back from the place.
The shape is definitely a draw which I like to play. Could be alot of factors though. The Elevate 85 shaft seems like it might be suited for someone wanting to draw the ball. Also my Pings are std lies and these are upright. I don’t really need upright lies, but they help me turn it over in the 6i and 7i irons and down by the ball I like the upright look more so than a std lie.

@DannyLe WITB video and watching him at Victoria National convinced me to buy an AI Smoke Hybrid with a Recoil Dart Shaft in it. Was waffling back and forth between a Paradym Super Hybrid and this, but if it’s as much fun to hit as the 3wood I think I’m gonna love the AI Smoke.
I’m a broken man with all these bad financial decisions.

The hybrids were so good for me, i really didn’t need to worry about the Super Hybrid. The SH was more of a debate with the fairway wood, but the 3HL was a better fit for me from distance gaps. Really hope you like them, the Smoke hybrids are absolute weapons on the course for me

I’m excited. I haven’t had a legit hybrid in the bag for quite some time Sort of moved away from them for the UW’s, which I’ll absolutely keep.
Got my irons testing in today. Afterwards I went to the store next door and tested drivers for about 40 min. Lets just say I am worn out. 🙂
Ended up hitting 6 shots with each iron. So I presented it as all shots and then took the best 4. Had a couple thinned ones and chunky ones really skewing the numbers.
Also I included the dispersion charts (best 4 shots) with each. With the wedges up through 9i its not really an apples for apples loft wise. But once you get to the 8i both sets match.

Thanks for posting this – some real interesting results there! Seems a bit more draw with Smoke and distance? Some dispersion seems pretty divided between the two

Yeah the shot shapes when hitting them were a bit more draw shaped with the Smoke HL.s Which I like to see. I tend to play a little push draw so I like to see it come back. With my Pings I have fought the push with the 7i and 6i not drawing back. The Smokes don’t always draw back either but it seems they don’t go as far right on me. From the GW to the 8i I could play either set comfortably. I think where the HL’s tend to separate themselves is in the 6i and 7i. I had an easier time hitting them.
If I include the all shots chart with the 6i and 7i here is what I see:
6 irons
Smoke HL
G425

7 irons – A little closer battle here, but the Smoke HL was flying 8 feet higher and with 700 more rpms of spin.
Smoke HL
G425

Take out the one outlier shot with both and the Smoke is more centered to where the Ping falls off to the right (push not drawing back)

I don’t hate the Cypher, but prefer the MMT feel by a small margin.

The Cypher 2.0 ain’t for me.
I called Callaway and will return/exchange for new w/ KBS PGH 65

Yeah for sure. We’ve had a boat load of rain though. Doubt any course will be open for a while as there is more rain in the forecast for another week or so. This spring and all the rain just wont end. I do want to get them out though on a cooler day as that is when I feel the graphites in my Ping irons shine. Curious how the light steels in these will feel around 37-40* temps. soggy, with a 6:30-7am tee time. My soon to be 48 yr old body doesn’t move like it once did in those conditions lol

Same age! Yeah putting a move on the ball is no longer automatic – I’ve found the help I get from the Smokes is so valuable. I’ve always been a GI player but these perform.. differently, in a good way
8i Review
What I want
The 8i is the workhorse in my bag usually. When I’m swinging poorly, it has to cover the 130 yd distance of my 9i. When I’m swinging well, I like stretching it out to near 148 or so. It’s the length and club I’m most comfortable with at setup and swing wise so I use it to help fill in the gaps of 9 or 7 (whichever I’m on the struggle bus with that day)!
Ideally, I want 140-145 with this club. I can swing 3/4 to cover 130 or step on it to stretch it out to 148.
What I got
All that and a lot more!!
This club feels like it’s got all the shots in it for me

After a solid drive, I get a really good approach shot

Flubbed a hybrid shot but the 8i comes through to get me on the dance floor to save par – so much confidence with this club!

And sometimes when you step on it the cart path smiles favorably on you and gives you a bit more rollout!
Had a chance to use this a couple times today. Very good results on some shaking lies and having to manipulate my swing for the shot I was playing. One thing I did notice today when used off of a tee is how much higher the ball flight is with this club at 22 degrees that some hybrids of this loft I remember in the past. Not a problem but does require me to consider a few things when using it, especially the wind.
Always a great surprise to see a shipping notification and get it overnight.
AI Smoke Hybrid incoming.

So I was grinding at the range today…I fell in love with my Ai Smoke 4i.
I was grinding on the new move. Had an extended moment of Zen with the 4i. High (really high for me) with about a 5 yard draw. Misses were straight bullets that didn’t turn over.
Center contact with this iron is just perfection. Even range rocks feel good!
How’s yours treating you @Jeff Spicoli ?

Absolutely loving the Ai Smoke 4i. Hit it twice today. Once off the tee on a the hardest tee shot on the course for me. It’s a tight tee shot with water on the right and lateral hazard on the left. Wind was in the face and I felt super confident pulling the 4i. Hit it right on my target and it landed safely.
The other time I pulled it was from about 235 out on a par 5. Had to carry a creek right in front of the green and it landed and stayed on the green.
I didn’t along this well with the UT. The Smoke does everything that a utility does but with more forgiveness and is easier to hit.

Wow. That’s amazing!
I’ll have more thoughts tomorrow but I hit my AI Smoke 3 Hybrid twice tonight. Paired with the Recoil Dart Blue 75s and ummm…..

My Ai Smoke 5H has been doing a lot of double duty lately. In addition to being a great club off the tee or off the deck, it’s also a really useful option for “chutting” when I’m too far off the green to use a putter. Grip down, stand tall and use a simple putting stroke, it’s almost 100% chunk-proof. I’ve come close to holing a few, and left a lot of them in easy tap-in range. My regular buddies I golf with are pretty fascinated by it.
