Its finally time.
I have seen a lot of golf club releases come and go over my years writing for THP, and the excitement has always been high for me as a self-admitted equipment geek. However, this release from Edel is in elite company where excitement and anticipation to break down a new release for our readership is concerned.
Having seen them, touched them, and hit them, I can tell you with absolute truth that the new Edel SMS Pro irons are bold. If you were someone who enjoyed what they brought to the table with the SMS Irons, but wanted a slimmer profile, you had better buckle up because these are that, and then some.
Edel SMS – Swing Match Weighting
Before I get into the irons, I do want to go over the Swing Match System again, some of you are familiar, while others may not be. I know I’m teasing you a bit here, but trust me, it’s worth it.
When Edel first unveiled their SMS Wedges a couple years ago, the Swing Match System was a revelation. Last year, it made its way to the SMS Irons and though sometimes identified by the company as Swing Match Weighting, the terminology is interchangeable. The entire design premise is centered around the reality that in golf, no matter what, clubface is always King in the end. We all swing our swing, and among that no two golfers will ever deliver the club exactly the same, so Edel asked why we expect a club to work the same for everyone?
SMS uses three weight ports in the rear of the club to allow the user to fine tune the clubhead weighting to provide the best impact situation for their swing. Standard weights in the irons are two 2-gram weights along with a heavier 8-gram one (heavier options are available). By shifting the heaviest weight heel, center, or toe-side Edel has shown through massive data collection that you can make the clubs more complimentary to not just your swing but release as well.
It remains refreshing that the centerpiece of this design concept by Edel is to get golfers into the best clubs for their swing by making real world adjustments to the weighting of irons or wedges as opposed to just relying on shaft, loft, and lie. Sure, it might make some golfers heads spin to think about it, but the science is real, and Edel is on the leading edge of making it usable in a much broader way than most companies would have ever believed possible.
Edel SMS Pro Irons
You say you want a “players iron”? Well, I dare you to find one that isn’t just a straight up MB which fits that categorization better than the SMS Pro irons. I openly admit that I was one who personally wanted a little more svelte look than the SMS Irons provided me, at least in the scoring irons. Well, when I saw these in hand a couple months ago the stream of words which came out of my mouth were a blend of awe and shock, in the best possible way. Confident ball-strikers will be very excited about this one.
Before we get into the size profile though, we first need to discuss that the Edel SMS Pro irons are a true one-piece design and not a hollow-body like the standard SMS. That allows them to be Precision Grain Forged out of 1025 Carbon Steel which Edel believes gives them the best combination of feedback, function, and durability.
For the shape? Easily the truest and most compact players cavity which I have seen, maybe ever. These are pieces of art in hand, the intricacies of the milling stands out from every angle you look at them, and the attention which was paid to getting the hosel to topline transition as clean as possible will make many extremely excited to see. At address you will get minimal offset (and by that, I mean almost none) and an almost triangular look to the upper toe which screams classic club design. If you were to sit these down at address in front of a golfer who grew up playing those elegant players irons of yesteryear, I would bet anything you will see them reveling in nostalgia.
All that said, Edel makes them theirs. Beyond the fact that they have managed to implement the Swing Match System into such a compact head along with the fact that it works as effectively as ever, that isn’t the only design feature. There is also the Tour Inspired Tri-Stepped Sole which has three separately milled surfaces on it. While it looks busy at first glance, the goal is to make these thin soles vastly more playable than other irons of this size.
The leading edge creates bounce which lets the club get through the turf without the initial digging that thinner soled small profile irons can be susceptible to. By then creating a middle tier to the sole, Edel has created bounce which will have the greatest interaction with and through the turf after impact. Finally, the trail relief on the rear reduces the overall sole width to make more efficient divot patterns which let the player feel like they are using a blade, but with the performance of a cavity back.
For those curious, the specifications of the SMS Pro Irons are as follows:
Club | Hand | Loft | Lie | Offset | Top Line | Length | Swing Weight | Raw Head Weight | Weight with 2-8-2 |
3 | RH | 20* | 60 | 2.8mm | 6.0mm | 39.00” | D2 | 226 g | 238 g |

The Details
Finished in clean brushed chrome, and adorned with their intricately applied branding/milling, the Edel SMS Pro irons are a masterclass visually from a company who truly seems to be feeling the confidence in their products right now. The SMS Pro irons will be available in 3-PW options (variable length only) paired with KBS Tour shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips as standard. Of course, there will be additional no-upcharge options available through Edel as well as fitting locations across the country. The SMS Pro irons will hit retail at $250/club.

Everything looks really good, but that would be marginally low (not crazy low) and last time I played with @Jman he was hitting a nice high ball with the irons. With these being a bit weaker lofted, I would have assumed a higher initial launch (wrongfully). Looks like a fantastic 6 iron, as an 8, makes me think about the lower launch angle or maybe that is just it. Weaker lofted here with a little less spin in that class, bringing the launch down. Could make these very unique.
Indoors of mats generally produces slightly different numbers. Plus as James said he was cold and not super loose. Get loose and warm and speed launch and spin all go up.

When I switched to my TC201s from my AP2s … I definitely lost some speed
Had a chance to try a few shafts off the list today and the one I seemed to get along with the best was not what I expected. Really hope I get a chance to go through a fitting for these and try the Pro heads with those shafts.
Got another set, I’ll get it up in a bit. Moved the weight to the heel, smash immediately got better hitting 1.31-1.33 with the 8i, which is about 0.04 better than I saw with the heavy weight in the middle.
This meant club speeds stayed similar, but ball speeds jumped, with higher launch. ?

I am still constantly blown away by what a difference moving that weight around does to the results. Swung a couple of different heads today with the same shafts and was definitely thinking about how the results with either might have been different with some weight moved around slightly.
Here you all go. 8i session 2, heavy weight in the heel. Ignore the right bias, that is purely my bad alignment and not trusting where the net is set up, I cannot wait for a projector.
As mentioned, a couple posts back, smash immediately went up when I moved it to the heel, I’m still fighting some swing demons, but this is much more where I like to be, albeit long and a lot of speed for such a small iron head.

I’ve noticed even just making solid contact. With the weight in the toe everything feels wipey to me, like I caught it 70%. Weight in the heel it feels like it’s supposed to be there and I can swing freely.

Not worried at all, I play compact irons better than anything else, and my gamers are also some of the most compact irons out there. My conversation has been more to emphasize to people that these are, no matter what, still VERY small irons, even with all the innovation that the weights provide, there is a level of ball-striking to get the most out of them.
They are precision instruments, and big misses won’t be treated the same way as in other irons like the SMS.

I feel like this is going to be a very interesting few months with these. Are you more heel or toe bias with your misses?

Pretty fun debut on course today. Played 18 in about 1:45, ended up 41/34 on the day, also made sure to hit as many irons as I could into greens, even when it meant too much club and having to play knockdowns or extremely worked shots.
With that, yes, I have thoughts.
First, the looks absolutely SHOCKED the dozen+ people whose hands I put them in before and after my rounds. To a person they couldn’t get over 1) the attention to detail where the milling and finish are concerned, and 2) the way they sit at setup shape wise. Likewise, many of them admired, but followed with them being out of their ball-striking league visually. I’m curious to see how/if that trend continues both during my review as I show them to people, and for Edel when it comes to fitting.
So, after a round as well as a couple indoor session on the Foresight, I have some thoughts for those who might care. 😉
1) The shape is as ridiculously excellent as I remember when Koske showed @Canadan and myself at Ballyhack with @JB. They remind me a lot of classic Titleist CB’s (not T100/AP’s, but the actual CB lines) as well as Miura in terms of the overall shaping, in particular the toe. Its just a really well balanced visual, the offset is minimal, the topline isn’t super cambered but it is enough so that they aren’t overly squared off at setup (topline wise) which IMO makes them scream player’s iron even more. The topline is one of my biggest beef’s with a lot of iron releases because it seems so many neglect the shaping and the impact it can have visually on a golfer, but also the role in sounf/feel.
2) Premium. I know they are $250 a stick, and you bet your arse that is up there, but, I do believe it fits what Edel is and could be because every single aspect of these irons are premium. The shape, the curves, the finish, the sole milling, how the weights are applied in the head, and even the weights themselves. Glare won’t be an issue, but the satin is bright and clean in the right ways, without the senseless mirrored chrome look which IMO is a bit dated.
3) They are THUMPY. Now, this is one of the greatest compliments I can give a forged players cavity back. When I say thumpy, I mean they are dense at impact in all the right ways. There is no sharp and there is no harsh, unless you miss to the extremes of the heads in which with this type of iron you should expect that feedback change to give you even more notice that hey, you just missed. I do want to lightly touch on the weight movement impact here, they feel good at heavy middle to me, and I was very impressed there, then I moved the heavy to the heel and the sound of the first strike today drew honest to goodness out loud comments from my playing partners. They feel amazing.
4) That said, there is still demand here. With the smaller profile, and I know some of you are sick of me talking about it, but I want to hammer home that these are as compact as you can get without going to a blade. That is exactly what Edel needed in their lineup imo, but just because they are new doesn’t mean they are for everyone. You will know when you miss, and you will see drop-offs more notable than that of the standard SMS irons, as you should. But, if you are a competent or even confident ball-striker, I challenge you to find another set which you would enjoy as much as these with the tech in them that these have through the Swing Match System. Low, high, right, left, little bleeders, dead on hard checking knockdowns, if you have the swing, these will give you every single shot shape in the toolbox. I had a blast today hitting some for absolutely no reason stingers with the 5i.
5) Distances for me might be slightly behind my gamers (T100S), but that could be temperature right now as well as familiarity. I know the last data set I provided shows what I saw on course today with the 8ik being a 168-170 carry club for me, which in a player iron is pretty staggeringly good.
6) More soon. Looks like a full week of work thanks to decent weather before I have to put this one on paper, so if you have Q’s, please ask away!
Little nudge for the night owls.

Its the profile I have come to embrace for sure, I hit smaller irons better, because I’m a freak.
I’ve tested it out in the 5, 8, and PW so far. Tomorrow, I’m going to mess with it more in the others on the course, and then tinker with heavy in the toe on the monitor, though for my particular swing and release pattern, the toe scares me. Haha

I think it’s worth trying, even if it’s just to get a handle on how the weighting system works in general. I watched a TXG video and I want to say Matty liked varying weights between scoring and mid irons.

Across the set, I’ve seen an average increase in smash/efficiency by about 0.08-0.10 which may not seem like a lot, but it is a lot. For me, that spot has been heavy in the heel, but for you, that may not be the ticket, it’s what makes these so damn intriguing.
The strangest thing for me is the way I can tell a difference in overall weight when I move it heel just holding the club, especially compared to out in the toe.
Fitting is definitely going to be key here, and I love that.

That has been the optimal setting for me. Not surprised as that’s where I was fit in the wedges too, other than the 60 which is toe because I hit only open faced shots with it. That said, I’ve not seen added draw bias, I’ve instead seen a more efficient and powerful flight.

More swings indoors yesterday as I collect data for the review, more of the same thoughts.
They’re more powerful than one would expect given lofts and profiles, now, part of that might be me being used to swinging smaller irons, but it’s been notable. Within a handful of yards of my 2022 gamers pretty consistently.
The biggest story for me remains the swing match system weighting and what it can do for golfers potentially. I knew it was effective as hell in the wedges, but I doubted it a bit in the irons…I shouldn’t have. Though I’m not sure it’ll come through crystal clear in the data, the difference in having the heavy weight in the “correct” spot is a bit jaw dropping for me.
The feel is impeccable. Maybe the best sounding players cavity I’ve hit when the weight is in the optimal position for the users swing/release. I stand by the term “thumpy”, it’s an amazingly good sound.
I do want to dive more into turf interaction then next couple days out on the course in the mud. So I’ll have more there soon!

These are special. The more I try to nitpick and critique them to find weaknesses, the more they shine. IF you are one who can play this size profile EFFECTIVELY, they lack nothing you could want.

Going to be doing a lot of daydreaming about these beauties in the next couple of weeks. I’m interested to see how I get along with a thinner soled iron.

this is the part that makes me a touch nervous, but that’s what a fitting can help with, excited to get to hit these tomorrow.
