Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 196. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, Gavin Dear from Shot Scope joins the show to discuss the new Pro ZR Rangefinder, Shot Scope V5 and launching course maps onto watches.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and Gavin dive into the latest software update that brings course maps directly into your existing Shot Scope watch. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as Gavin Dear goes Off Course.
Episode 196 is here and Dan and Gavin discuss the following topics.
ShotScope MyStrategy
Launching Course Maps on Shot Scope X5
The Data Experience THP Event
Pro ZR Rangefinder
A Soon to be Released Shot Scope V5
And so much more

This just reminded me it was Friday! Can’t wait to give this one a listen to hear what tangents Canadan takes @GavinwithaR1 or will it be the other way around.
This will be fun to hear!!
This one is, as always, going to be great. Love me some shot scope.
Cannot wait to listen. Gavin is still the #1 instructor in Virginia soon to be New Jersey as well.
Will give this one a listen on the way home today, cannot wait. Love ShotScope and the Data Experience. They really do put out a phenomenal product and Gavin and Jen are so fun to meet, and the breakdowns they have done for THPers following these events are simply amazing.
Will queue this up shortly during my morning drive.

I admit with the Ohio season in full bloom and not sight of golf recently I have not tuned in… For that I’m sorry
However this title got my attention and grabbed some enthusiasm back for the 2024 golf season
Love listening to Gavin and talk about the company and products. Slight concern is if he’s luring us in saying he played poorly or is he now fired up to practice more ?
Bad shot comment is interesting but the counter is that’s your game and without reliable data how can someone improve?
Listening now on my drive in to work. Good stuff so far! Especially the data collection discussion
2-3 better decisions a round is a understatement ?

I was thinking the same thing as I was listening. Love that scottish accent. Looking forward to meeting him in May at Hidden Creek.
I’ll give this one a listen later. I’m a little intrigued with the V5, I’ve been kicking around the idea of diving back into shotscope tracking. I had a bunch of issues with my X5 that soured me a bit.
I also started to get obsessive about the data and I think it hurt my game rather than helped because I was ‘playing to the numbers’. What I mean by that is I was more worried about hitting my numbers so my round data would look good, I’d obsess over every single shot more and my mind would be on how my shotscope would look after the round than the round itself. For me, I need to be more free out there and let the game come to me so to speak. But, I’m a unique kind of weirdo when it comes to that sort of stuff my experience getting obsessed with the data and how it looks shouldn’t be a warning flag to anyone.
April 3rd for the V5 can’t wait!
Ear plugs on day two got it.
lol i can appreciate the ignorance is bliss attitude towards the data and not wanting it to piss me off

This is an odd one for me as Dan sorta made a similar comment in the Podcast but the numbers are our game no matter what. Why does poor shots sour some from the data collection when that’s your game, your swing, your ability with the great, good, bad and ugly. The great thing on Shot Scope and the ability to track is it shows you were improvements can be made within that game. Like Gavin mentioned in the podcast a PGA professional didn’t know where he often missed off the tee till the information was made aware of it through data. This should be used as a asset to improve rather than a instrument you’re trying to create a high score on in order for you to get better.
Can’t wait to dig into this one.
Just finished listening. Very interesting stuff from @Canadan and @GavinwithaR1 .
The difference between the X5 and V5 is interesting. Kind of an upgraded V3.

I think you’ve captured it in the highlighted part. Some of us must be wired like that and instead of using the data to learn and improve, we use the data to further ‘Gamify’ our time out on the course.
I’m not sure I can properly explain why I think about it like that. When I was using ShotScope and would put a poor swing on a ball and not get the result I was hoping for my immediate first thought was “Great, now that’s going to be haunting me forever in my data.”, instead of thinking about how I was going to handle the next shot to save the score on that hole. To me that’s a problem, specifically a ‘Me problem’ but a problem.
The system is fantastic. When it works well it works really well for a lot of people. I’m interested in getting into that group of people that it helps. Maybe that’s the next big hurdle for me in golf is to work more on my mental game to be able to completely tune out that I have trackers on my clubs until after the round. As long as the system works seamlessly and records everything without any input or thought I think that becomes easier.
I’ll be paying close attention to the feedback on V5. Luckily for me I’ve got two good friends that are participating in an awesome experience with ShotScope later this year and I’m sure they will do a good job talking me into adding the trackers back to my clubs. :p
As much as I love listening to data @GavinwithaR1 these first few minutes listening to business @GavinwithaR1 is brilliant as well.
+1 for hide and seek instead of golfing for the first round out too.
Started to listen to this one, will finish later today. Always happy to hear Gavin talk!

I think a big part for me has been the regression in my golf game over the last five years or so.
There was a time when I was incredibly happy and proud of the consistency of my game, and when that started to go downhill, I found solace in the fact that I could just move on from it and solve it on my next shot. The idea of looking back at that reality later while overanalyzing it felt kind of… painful.
It’s a pretty dark place, honestly. And it’s a silly one, if I am being honest with myself.

Shot Scope would be a great tool to use in regards to helping out with what needs to be looked at or focused on. You can then use those stats to keep track and show the improvement, I know last year I used it a lot to figure out what I needed to focus hard on the range for.

Well, I don’t need ShotScope to know that my driver needs a lobotomy lmao
That said, every time I have Gavin on the show, or read THPer stories, it makes me want to stop being a baby about it and dive head first.

:ROFLMAO: You’ve said driver for years but have you worked with anyone to fix it? Always wind up kicking myself after a lesson for a quick 2 min fix to create a much better swing after waiting to long and getting frustrated.
Fun listen so far. I am wondering if @Canadan is like me. I want data, I just dont want to be bothered by it during a round and just want to play golf..

I’m going to disagree based on my early experience with the X5. Hopefully it got better and based on those I’ve talked to about it that seems to be the case but my first few months with it were very rough sailing. Another reason I’ll be paying close attention to the feedback in the V5 rollout.
Qued up for later. Didn’t get to listen this morning.

I’ve paid relatively good money to teach pros what is wrong with my driver, yes.
Cost of PGA show booth ?

Well, I’ve owned a ShotScope already. I think it’s making rounds with THPers somewhere haha
The biggest issue I had with the shot tracking products was their presence on the club. There are options out there with giant tags on top of clubs, and I really loved that ShotScope has a small footprint on clubs (although the tag on the putter with how I hold it was a learning curve based on how I hold the club.
It’s not a deal breaker, to me. It’s an adaptation.

Yeah, that caught my ear. As well as how popular they are in different regions of the world. I always wonder how that works and why? Are there more options in the US? Are we less aware? I wonder what it is that they have 25% of the market in Europe I think he said but are trying to be the third option in the US..

10000% I swung some clubs of a buddy that have the large arcos buttons and it totally messed with my head. I couldn’t do it..
Woah…learned some things about the strategy part of the dashboard. I really need to dive into that before the season starts.
Hearing @Canadan talk about his trepidation (SAT word) in recording shots is interesting. I like the data but never thought of the golfer that likes to have the goldfish memory thing.
@GavinwithaR1 just dropped a knowledge bomb on me that makes so much sense. From 170 out F/M/B and inside shoot the pin. That makes so much sense, not the 170 part having a green light distance is something I have to start thinking about.
Hmmm, the 3 longest clubs overlay on the watch is very interesting.
Man I remember that fireside chat @GavinwithaR1 knowing we were a part of that is pretty cool!

RIGHT!
Who knew, I mean obviously they do. But that talk about ROI for it, like what is it worth to them as a company. The returns are in more than just immediate sales as well I’m sure. You still need to rationalize that to the people who do the books but I’m glad he views it that way.
Finished a bit ago, the show was brilliant. I say it nearly every week about how much I enjoy the show but seeing a different side of these companies and characters within them is so refreshing and eye opening.
Another great show. I agree about the L2 being a game changer in the industry. Great product plus its price point is just unreal.
Really interested in V5. April 3!!!
I’m not one to typically listen to podcasts, but being a big fan of Shot Scope, the company, the people and its products, I definitely listened to this one. All parts of it were informative, but after hearing @GavinwithaR1 talk about the benefits and how best to use both My Strategy and the Whole Hole Maps, I may go back and dig into them more. I admit that I have been skeptical of their value for me, being someone who basically plays the same course all the time. However, I now believe there may be benefit for me as well.
Well done, @Canadan, on getting all that great info out of Gavin!

Just went back and re-listened to the part about MyStrategy. Unreal!!! Gotta get my tags back on my clubs. I’ll use my V3 until I see some reviews on V5.
I can’t get enough of this talk and look forward to seeing Gavin at the Data Experience THP Event.
Loved listening to this. @GavinwithaR1 is so knowledgeable and you can tell he loves Shotscope and trying to make people better golfers. And yes when you are at the Data Experience you can tell He and @jenisontheforum want to win. That competitiveness comes through but never takes away focus on the product or THPers enjoyment. It was fun hearing more about the hole view on the watch and my strategy. And I loved hearing how they did the showing your distance off the tee but didn’t go further because people having faith in the numbers Shotscope provides is paramount to them!
@GavinwithaR1 did a great job of building @Golfers Anonymous up last year, but now he is on the opposing team it will be fun to see the other side.
Another great listen. I used to track shots a long time ago and stopped doing it. I know it’s super helpful, I should look into it again this year. I do know tagging is not for me. I have the Shotscope GPS unit, and between forgetting to tag and having it fall off the belt clip a few times I ended up giving up on it.
