Alignment assistance is an underrated piece of golf ball technology that seems to be making its way to almost every company’s lineup. Examples are varied, ranging from understated, to overt, and beyond. Even Titleist, long known for their subtle, classic designs, has dipped their toes in the alignment aid waters, with both an off the rack solution in 2021 and a custom stamping program. The 2021 Pro V1 and Pro V1x were both available with “Enhanced Alignment”, which consisted of two straight lines framing the standard bi-directional sidestamp, but the concept never really took off with consumers or Tour Staff.
Rather, it became evident to Titleist that a long, straight line, applied with a marker, was the most popular alignment aid on Tour. Staff players like Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark, and Matt Fitzpatrick all employed this simple and effective modification to their golf balls. Seeing an opportunity, the company is announcing Performance Alignment, a stamped line available in four different colors, and it’s available on the 2023 versions of Pro V1 and Pro V1x.
“I use a black line, because I cannot putt without this,” said Pro V1 player Viktor Hovland. “I literally cannot aim. I’ve just never been good at just standing over the ball and being able to aim that way,” Hovland said. “I’ve found it’s really helped my putting, especially on the short ones, when there’s not too much break involved. I just did a blind test with a line on and then without a line, and I just aimed it miles better with a line on.”
Titleist Performance Alignment resembles a typical Sharpie line but is actually a subtle arrow shape in either black, red, blue or green. It spans 105 degrees in length, so slightly less than 1/3 of the golf ball, and is approximately 60% longer than a standard Titleist sidestamp.
“Performance Alignment emulates how many of the best players in the game mark their Titleist,” said Jeremy Stone, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “The benefit of players marking their golf ball with an alignment aid – specifically a long, straight line – is evident across all levels of competitive golf and plays a significant role in helping them improve their aim and accuracy.”

Love it @Hawk and I think it’s great that the ball companies are doing these sort of things that we’ve been doing for a while now. I’m kind of sad that it’s only on their premium balls and not on their distance or GI balls with the lower compression but for those that play the V1(x) I’m sure they will be a best seller.
I’m loving the improved alignment markers from so many brands. This one is simple but likely effective. I’m still not paying $60 for golf balls though.
I like the aid. The $60/dozen tag is stupid.
$5 for a sharpie line…… I understand the “tech” but this one is a reach.
I would just draw my line on the ball for that price. ????
$60 a dozen. $5 per golf ball-that’s insane. They have now passed my price point.
Insane cost that one can put on a golf ball with a sharpie.
I’m hoping lines will be banned and they’ll have to make 1/2 the ball void of marks. 😉
not much worse than watching someone line up their ball 3-4 times then blow the putt anyway :p
They look “Titleistie”
I absolutely love this for golfers, and I sort of hate it for myself haha
Finding ProV1’s so regularly around my course, I am sad that some of them will have lines on them coming soon. #NakedOrBust
Yay!! Except for price. ?
Otherwise yay. Knew these were coming and am excited for people that play them and that Titleist for finally dipping in a little better on alignment. I still wonder how many people are going to want to pay extra for something that comes on other balls without extra charge. I feel like some will, but I feel like I’m going to hear them grumble about it too. Especially with a couple other current balls coming down in price recently.
Doesn’t Golfballs.com sometimes offer free alignment markings when you order through them?
So how much are standard Pro V’s? Seems like $55 based on comments?
to me $5 to not have to mark them all seems like a worthy trade.
The funny thing as I was reading the article I found myself wondering the percent on sales based on Tour compared to science
Much prefer this over triple track but not paying $60 for golf balls

my thoughts exactly ?
I like it but won’t buy it. I won’t pay more for that type of alignment, especially since it can be done with a sharpie.
kind of disappointed in Titleist for being greedy.
Simple and clean, and will last longer than my sharpie lines. I don’t hate it! Good write up @Hawk

Not sure how it’s greedy, it provides and option. Plus…a companies job is to make money, sooooooooo

If you do a subscribe and save, I believe it is. I used to see the free deal on single dozen orders but it’s been a while.

Yep. I do the Align XL from golfballs.com that is very similar and it’s essentially free on a subscribe and save order.

If their standard release is a certain number, and they add something to it (which costs them something), why wouldn’t it be more?
Seems pretty standard based on all the other companies. We just saw a release the other day that did the same from another company.

It does to me. I’ve been having this debate with a few guys and that’s why I’m so curious how it will play out. I would pay it. I can’t stand messy sharpies, it’s more durable like @Jman mentioned (will last for the life of the ball), it’s a cleaner line, etc etc, and it’s ready to go. I’m a convenience buyer. If I didn’t have to waste my time on something it’s usually worth it.
I feel like a lot of people will want that, but not want to pay for it. Or at least not gladly want to pay for it. I really do expect to hear a lot of b****ing about it.

Because it isn’t with some others? Triple Track isn’t more. Hell it’s damn near all you can get here if you remember that thread. It’s basically their standard at this point and they don’t charge more for it.
I don’t mean a special design or branding. I mean lines. It’s a line. They are a lot of versions of a line or lines that don’t cost more.

Triple track is a very interesting point. Same with Truvis I guess, technically.
In my head I meant more ‘in line’ stuff that had things added to it. Was just thinking about the TM ball from the other day.
Funny, I just assumed all the V1’s were $60 when I wrote this up.
This option comes in at the same price as a custom alignment line, so I guess I see both sides of the argument. On one hand, there’s a precedence for the upcharge, but on the other hand this specific customization is much narrower in scope.
Personally, if I had the choice of line or no line (and using a sharpie) I’d go with the line for convenience and durability. Won’t pretend the upcharge wouldn’t annoy me though.

I mentioned the triple track comparison to a Titleist guy not long ago ($10 less right now I think). Said I’d wager they’ll actually lose a few people to Callaway about all this. Die hard types. The response was classic Titleist. Lol
I expect to pay more for the busier things on a ball like bacon or whatever. ? But again, Tru Track is the same price as their white balls..

they are all doing it wrong, either way.
I’d pay more for LESS on a golf ball ?
i’d like to offer my alignment marking services to those that don’t want to pay $60 for this.
60 dollars for a line is kinda crazy to me. But they can sell them for whatever people will buy them for. If they don’t sell, the price will go down..
golf balls prices are getting crazy!

Oh I absolutely LOVE this. This might be enough to make me go back to PROV1x. I’m tired of my lines wearing off on the ball though I don’t love the price increase
I will say though, I do enjoy the ritual of marking a lot of balls in the basement with a sharpie over winter when I’m dreaming of golf, but that’s less a convenience thing and more an Ohio issue…
