After a long wait, Snell Golf is back and evolving as we roll into peak golf season for 2023. There is no denying that Snell was one of the Direct to Consumer (DTC) companies who were on the leading edge of the segment for a good while, but the pond has certainly gotten more crowded since that time. As such, it is no surprise that we are seeing the brand once again try to step out and differentiate themselves.
2023 Snell MTB PRIME and MTB PRIME X Golf Balls
The obvious way for the brand to differentiate is to let Dean Snell do his thing, because by now his role in some of the most technologically advanced golf ball designs ever is pretty well known, as is his lengthy list of patents held. With the MTB PRIME and PRIME X designs, it certainly looks, at least on paper, that the man behind the brand has continued to push the performance for value factor with the new designs, but we will get to that.
First things first though, you might have noticed the new branding that Snell is rolling out. Gone is the slightly oversized script font and in its place is a more modern fine-line block letter look. According to the company, this is both to refresh the look as they felt it was time for that, and to open the door to more practical branding on other potential products down the line. It will certainly be interesting to hear what you all think about the new look and whether they stuck the landing or changed for the sake of change.
As for the golf balls, other than the obvious goal of improving performance, the other primary objective according to Snell Golf was to differentiate the MTB from each other a bit more than they were previously. This is something that they received ample feedback from consumers on and also will allow them to have a broader fitting potential than they previously had. Both balls remain 3-piece designs with urethane covers, but the internal aspects are where we see the differences.
The MTB PRIME is focused on achieving a softer feel that many golfers tend to prefer in present day. The creation and implementation of what Snell is calling the “FLEX+” mantle was the key to chasing this performance trait. The MTB PRIME is a softer feel that aims to maintain faster ball speeds with lower tee spin and higher iron spin. They also have utilized a new dimple pattern this time that keeps the trajectory down as well.
On the other side, the MTB PRIME X seeks to control the spin off irons more, which aims it at the stronger player who already tends to spin the ball too much. Part of achieving that is a firmer feel through the “FLEX-“mantle that stiffens things up a bit to keep high ball speed and low spin while, as mentioned, keeping iron spin lower. Because of the lower spinning nature, the MTB PRIME X has a different dimple pattern than its sibling to help get the flight up and maximize distance.
The Details
In case you are wondering, yes, the DTC focus is still very much there for Snell Golf with the two new golf balls. Each will be priced at $32.99 per dozen with a volume based discount possible (5 dozen for $29.99/ea). What do you think about the new design offerings and branding shift from Snell? Does it appeal and hit the mark for you, or leave you longing for the past? Jump into the conversation and let us know in the comments below, or on the THP Community.
Nice writeup @Jman. I like the logo and branding, it’s clean and simple. Not as much a fan of the alignment aid, I can see why people think it looks like a range ball.
I’ve typically shied away from DTC balls, but it’s tempting to give the Prime a try at that price point.
Nice to see Snell update. The test and look of the logo is just ok, but the performance of the Prime offering more spin and lower flight might put it into play.
I’m thinking of giving these a go. I just bought a dozen TP5 and a dozen CSTT so unless I lose 4-6 balls a round (again) I won’t need to order til later this summer. I love the price point tho. If I didn’t have store credit I wouldn’t have bought what I bought so to see these come in in the Low $30’s is fantastic.
I think the Prime would fit me well with the lower flight since I’m a high ball hitter. Would really like to give these a try. New logo looks good, alignment aid could be better…maybe without the two lines.
I was wondering a week or two ago when we’d see a new Snell release so I’m glad to see it and I would try both of these. I’m torn on the new branding but it is not something that changes my desire to give them a try
Very odd what they did with the compression and spin profiles. For that reason, I’m out.
Switched from chromes soft and gained 10 yards carry. Never looked back. Snell >>>>> Callaway
I think the logo, name and alignment are all a big step backwards.
I had a horrid time trying to put the original MTBs in play so not rushing to try. but always curious about the reviews of these types of balls and might try down the road.
Good golf balls. Snell is about 45 minutes from my home. They sold out the entire pre-order shipment of Prime in one day. I look forward to trying this golf ball.
Cool to see something new from snell.
Is the Prime X kind of like a Pro V1X left dash? High launching but lower spin than a traditional X profile.
Reading elsewhere, it seems the new Snell balls have gone to a TPU cover instead of cast urethane, and some don’t like that. I don’t know enough about balls to recognize one from the other and understand what the performance or durability trade-offs might be. Anyone?

What do you mean, can you elaborate? Just curious..

A lower spin X ball? That seems so contradictory to everything we know. I thought the MTB ball was ok, not sure I’d be rushing to try this but the price is decent.
As far as the logo and rebranding, it’s a big miss for me.

X “used” to be the lower spinning ball for years.
I have no need for more golf balls at the moment. Trying to not give in to impulse at the moment.
Branding is a little bland to me, I feel like they could have achieved their objectives while still having a little more appeal than straight block lettering.
LOVE the price point. Well done.
Was a huge fan of the original MTB, not as much a fan of the current MTB-Black. Not sure what to think of the new Prime versions. Great price point for sure, especially compared to everyone else raising prices.
Box o balls arrived today. Will be playing the Prime tomorrow.
Looking forward to playing them but I can’t say I’m hitting thr ball well enough right now for me to notice a difference or the ball make a difference.

Does anyone know if Nassau Golf(Korea) is still making these for Snell? I know Taylormade bought Nassau Golf about 18 months ago and the rumor at the time is they would stop making DTC golf balls. I know Dean Snell was the longtime head of the golf ball product category for Taylormade so maybe that relationship is strong enough that they still manufacture for him.
No. Since Taylor Made acquired Nassau, given the ionomer shortage they focused on trying to keep up with their demand. That was the reason for Snell’s lack of stock. Dean was forced to re-formulate the cover material because the only other factory in the world that manufacture cast urethan covered golf balls (other than Accushnet/Titleist) was Foremost and they could not add Snell’s production as their biggest customers, Vice and DSG/Maxfli, utilized their maximum production capacity. Snell had to re-formulate the cover to TPU and set up QC in other factories to his high level of quality control. He currently has two factories manufacturing for him now and two more working on coming online so he don’t run into these problems ever again.
Yes. I’m hoping with Dean’s engineering prowess he’s designed and formulated his TPU to be as good, if not better, than Srixon, Bridgestone or Callaway. It’s funny, Dean actually was on the team that invented the cast urethane process at Titleist.
I ordered a dozen of the Prime to test them out. So far I like them better than the MTB balls off the putter (slight bit softer) which was really my only complaint with the MTB balls, especially when it was a little cooler outside. I hope to test on course this weekend.
Been gaming Snells since they came out, I think, in 2016 or so. Kind of a fan boy. Been playing the Black’s for along time. Occasionally try something different and have not found anything that really blows me away compared to the Black’s.
Just got my shipment of MTB Prime balls tonight, playing them tomorrow.
Really surprised they reduced the price. How does that happen?
Everybody else has increased their prices for the others I’ve tried.
Hope these live up to my expectations!
We’ll see.
I took the MTB Prime to the local Trackman sim and found the feel and performance are up there with the MTB I used last year. My scores are neither going to be helped or hindered by the ball itself, and for that I am glad I purchased the MTB Prime. With that said, my 54 degree Zipcore significantly scratched up the cover after 2 hits. I continued using the same ball between myself and my wife for the remainder of warmups and an 18 hole par 3 course. I compared that ball with a well used MTB-X and the damage was more noticeable on the MTB Prime… significantly more noticeable. The durability, it seems, is the only con. I am interested to see how well it wears on real course scenarios.
I played Snell for many years.. might have to give them a try again!
I’ve played Snell golf balls for the last four or five yeatrs, I was drawn to them for the price and the fact that I tended to hit more greens and stick them than other balls. I do not have a very fact swing speed, 90-95 mph with my driver, but I got excellent distance with the MTB-X. I ordered a sample of the Prime and Prime-x, I hope to get out and hit them along with some other brands to test for distance, height etc. in the next week or so. I agree with an earlier post that the alignment makes it look like a range ball, the logo is OK, I didn’t mind the last one so no big deal on the change. The cover on the Prime-x felt stickier that on the regular Prime, I’ll see if that makes a difference on the course. I am happy with the new cost. I may even try the Get Sum, who knows what Dean has developed there. I’ll try to post my experience on the range if I get the opportunity.
I discovered that the Snell Prime does not take a Black Sharpie marker right out of the box. I cleaned the balls with simple green and found that either a red Sharpie or Blue BIC seemed to work OK but the black still wouldn’t stick. The Prime-X marked with a ren Sharpie just fine. Thought I would give everyone a heads up
GMK.
I played Snell for several years and was a fan. Performance and price, but switched to the Maxfli Tour last season. I switched to yellow a few years ago. So I am waiting for both the 2023 Maxfli and Snell to introduce those. I did purchase a dozen of the new Prime to give em a try. They fit me well. Just a short story….I was playing a yellow Pro V1 and sucked for the first 7 holes. Switched to the new Snell and went 1 under for the remaining 11 holes. Now, understand that not comparing to a Pro V1, but only saying they are an excellent ball. I like supporting the little guy and still believe Snell is putting out an excellent product. No issue with the logo and the alignment aid. Now waiting for yellow!
I’ve been a fan of Snell for a few years now, they’ve been consistent in providing a great product at a great price. The new branding looks good to me, no question where I’m going to place my sharpie dot! I ordered and received the PRIME X, I’m looking forward to playing them!
Bought the Prime and Prime X trial pack…put them through the paces on the simulator to see which gave me the best numbers. For me, it was the Prime and it wasn’t really close. Launched higher, more speed, more spin on the irons and not noticeably different on the driver.
That said, I also bought the PXG golf balls and tested those…wow if you want spin, those things are the highest spinning golf ball I’ve seen on a launch monitor.
I’ve noticed what I thought were the best golf balls for me were the Maxfli Tour X and The TP5X and all the firmer golf balls. After testing the Prime and Prime X, I might have to revisit my thinking. I don’t spin those golf balls at all. 6500 spin with a 9 iron is not great….even at 100 feet in the air, still a decent amount of roll out.
Just bought the Prime trial pack. Price point is too good to not give these a shot.
Snell is my favorite X ball, and the only one I can get consistency with in the approach & short game. I would like to try these for sure.
What is everyone’s take on these balls? I was thinking of getting the sample pack to try both again. I liked the balls at the Snell Event way back when, so I’d like to see the difference.

that event was so fun
Yeah it was. Such a great time at an awesome course (y)
The new balls are fantastic, definitely give them a try…
I would like to try these. But I have enough golf balls..
I tried the Prime. I liked that it was a bit softer feeling off the putter (something that is really important to me) than the old MTB-Black and MTB-X, but a couple greenside bunker shots really damaged the cover. Also, the ball was pretty done (cover wise) after 18 holes even on rounds with no bunker shots. In contrast, my other gamers, the Maxfli Tour and Bridgestone XS give me better spin numbers and I can actually play those balls for several rounds without much cover damage. I’ve not tried the Prime X.

I have used Snell a lot and interchange the MTB with the ProV1. The ProV feels a little better, but the MTB is fantastic for the price point. Performance is similar, but durability is not the best.
I use both as well and agree with you 100% on your assessment. I will add that I do have some MaxFli Tour in the mix as well.
Super Bowl weekend special, now $20/doz.
I have way too many balls on hand and I’m still tempted to grab some at that price!
