“It’s time to silence your inner naysayer and unleash your inner shotmaker.”
It is crystal clear that Cleveland Golf is done sitting back and letting things happen, because a catchline like the one above is anything but introspective. No, it is a look you in the eyes while they take your lunch money kind of statement.
But you know what? It’s about time, because when it comes to the CBX lineups of wedges from Cleveland Golf, that is exactly what people should be doing. Get out of your own way and get after it knowing you have a club which is designed specifically for golfers just like you. So, with today’s unveiling of the new CBX Full-Face 2 wedges, Cleveland Golf believes it’s time to get after it.
2023 Cleveland CBX Full-Face 2 Wedges
You want to start an internet argument with “traditionalists”, if you can’t go with a loft discussion, then bring up full face grooves. Frankly, the fact that it remains such a polarizing thing for so many is fascinating, especially when the reasoning makes perfect sense for us mortals who prefer to use all the surface area on our wedges. Good news, the CBX Full-Face 2 is the largest clubface the company has ever put into a CBX wedge.
In fact, there is 13% more striking area than with the original RTX Full-Face and nearly 7% compared to the original CBX Full-Face. When it comes to amateur golfers who can have variable consistency, that is one heck of an increase. Much of the size is made possible by the high-toe shaping that the Full-Face 2 is utilizing, but Cleveland is making it crystal clear that they spent a tremendous amount of time ensuring that the look at setup won’t be too much for golfers. A large part of that is thanks to a lot of focus on the topline to hosel transition.
ZipCore is alive and well with the Full-Face 2. Also, the removal of heavy steel in the hosel, and instead utilizing a light-but-strong low-density dampening material, has proven successful for Cleveland Golf since its introduction. With that, the Full-Face 2 it is working in tandem with the Hollow Cavity that sits below the wedges Gelback dampening TPU to not only align the CG of the design horizontally, but it also tunes performance vertically as well. Internal testing done by Cleveland Golf shows 7% heel/toe and 13% high/low MOI improvements on strikes compared to the original.
But wait! There’s more ZIP! In fact, there is a lot more, as the face of the CBX Full-Face 2’s are packed with technology as well, in fact, it is the same technology they are utilizing in their flagship RTX6 wedges. First, there is UltiZip which are a specialized combination of sharper (11%), deeper (7.3%), and more tightly spaced (7.2%) grooves that work to not just cut through debris but funnel it away while maximizing bite off the face (7.2% more). Not to mention, the Full-Face 2 also have 2 more grooves per face.
Next is HydraZip. If you have played in the rain or the morning dew, then you know the havoc moisture can play on spin, HydraZip is Cleveland Golf’s answer to that. This is a dynamic face blast to create textures which maximize the friction and consistency of spin regardless of the condition. On top of that, there is angled laser milling that optimizes friction even more. Since golfers use certain lofts in different ways, Cleveland also uses different texture blasts and laser patterns in the 50-52 versus the 54-60.
The CBX Full-Face 2 wedges also have a new sole shape which should excite those who found that the original didn’t allow them the manipulation/versatility that they desired. First, the lower lofts (50-52) have more bounce through a Full Sole shaping while the higher ones (54-60) have a C-Shaped Sole which claims more refined heel/toe relief. The bigger change, however, is in the new Bounce Chamfer. For those who don’t know, chamfer is essentially a transitional edge, in this case it is at the leading edge of the wedges. According to Cleveland, this plays a notable impact on how the wedge gets through the turf without digging and adds notable performance improvements of interaction on touch and pressed shots.
The Details
The CBX Full-Face 2 wedges will be available in 50/52 Full Grind as well as 54/56/58/60 C-Shaped and hit stores 2/3/2023 with a price of $169.99. Standard shaft options will be the True Temper DG Spinner 115 Tour Issue (steel) or Project X Catalyst 80 Spinner (graphite) with Lamkin Crossline grips. That said, as always Cleveland has a plethora of custom shaft/grip options and yes, custom paint-fill will be available on these as well.
Bold looks good on Cleveland Golf, but are the changes to the new CBX Full-Face 2 wedges enough to get you to step outside the box of perpetuated tradition and try a wedge with forgiveness? Delve into the conversation in the comments below or on the THP Community and let your opinion be heard!
These look great. Love the micro-grooves, the fact they are packed together. Dew / wetness assistance – all of it. Oh, and the striking area is larger than before. Beautifully done Cleveland.
Nice article @Jman
Man, I don’t know about the full face. I’m not 100% opposed and wouldn’t be stubborn about it, but I’ve not tried one out. It’s just such a different look.
I do love the added forgiveness and sole shaping. Definitely worth a look.
I am really liking what is being said here. Thinking this will get some time in the bag in a 50 degree.
Double the Zip sounds good.
UltiZip and HydraZip
I have a couple of older Callaway wedges that have the full face, and I prefer that. On a side note, you don’t have to be young or athletic to develop a very good short game.
This seems like perfect wedges to pair with the ZX5 or ZX4 range.

Feels counter intuitive doesn’t it? We are always told to hit the middle of the club face and now multiple companies have full face wedges.
I think it’s great, not that I’ll use the outside edge but that I have the ability to if I open the face or have a bad swing or something else like that.
The water resistance technology is amazing and could really help. I can’t say I’m crazy about the look at the back of the wedge but it wouldn’t stop me from trying them.

Having grooves extend in wedges is because most golfers manipulate the face for different shots such as opening it when hitting it out of rough or a bunker. When doing so, impact will then in many cases be higher and towards the toe.
Grooves are there to channel away sand, grass and moisture to create a clean surface to produce spin.
They look nice. That leading edge looks halfway between the latest Callaway Full Toe and the previous one.
I like what they’re doing. I’m in the market for a new set of wedges this season and Cleveland is definitely high on my list.
Haven’t tried a full face wedge yet. I do like the idea and look.
Might have to look into these. Currently have the 56 degree cbx 1 full face.
I love my CBX2’s and will probably try out this full face version because I loved my PM Grind and have a full face Jaws Raw right now in my highest lofted wedge. I really enjoy the added groves on the face with my highest lofted wedge for sand shots, out of the rough, everything really
Seems like a great wedge. More grooves to improve shots making. Better grooves to improve or keep the spin up. Seems like a solid choice.
I really like the looks of these and the tech sounds interesting. I’m excited to see them in hand.
2 more grooves, hydrazip… It’s hard to think of these being able to get any better, but seems like they did. Hope to see more CBX converts this year with these.
If the full face is up there with loft traditionalism, I totally missed that. Huh.
My only concern with some full face wedges are their full swing performance. I don’t use that wedge for many full shots, but just in case I did use it, I’d want it to perform as expected
Oh these look gooood. Hydrazip is some pretty cool stuff.
great write up as always ??
I am all in with the full face high toe mafia. These will definitely get a look next time I am in the market for wedges – likely end of this season.
Pretty cool to see Cleveland introducing the new ZipCore technology and full face for this release. The CBX should get more attention now with all that it offers and something that I might take a look at when it’s time to replace my wedges.
As a dew sweeper the Hydrazip sounds interesting. Looks a little like the Mack Daddy on the face which I had good results with except tight lies.
I currently have the last CBX Zipcore wedge and still in my 90 day return window so I will have to take a closer look. I do notice they changed the bounce stamp from black to white minor but nevertheless.
Nice write up @Jman
I like the term “variable consistency”. Its such a kind way to say it. ?
Love my CBX2s and I honestly have never considered a full face. But with a lot of my rounds starting before 8am, and my usual course not having the best drainage due to location, the HydraZip sounds like something that would benefit me even more than the extra grooves would.
I was intrigued by the Hydrazip when it was mentioned in the RTX6 write up. So Happy to see it used in the CBX2 full face as I currently used the CBX wedges and will be checking these out for sure when it’s time to upgrade.
Great in depth write up! I really like my RTX’s but will definatly give this one a look in a 54 degree when it’s time to replace. The full face and the tech involved there has my attention.
@Jman good stuff here! Looks like they’re really implementing some great tech into the CBX lineup. I play the CBX2 and think it’s a tremendous piece of equipment. I never played a full face wedge before, maybe that needs to change.
Big fan of how they cover a large loft spectrum with this release. When OEMs provide lots of options we all win.
Fantastic write-up @Jman! I just replaced my wedges last year so I’m good for now, but I’m 100% in on full face. Add in the forgiveness of CBX and these will definitely be way up on the list when it’s time to refresh.
Good chance a 58* will end up in the bag this year. I could benefit from the full face grooves and the Hydrazip sounds amazing.
i don’t have any issues with my current wedges but i think these would make for a nice refresh
I have 52 in the original CBX and the black 58 in the full face CBX2. I LOVE the CBX wedges and this looks to be a great addition.
My 52 could use a replacement too.
My RTX are less than a year old, less than 30 rounds probably. But I’ll definitely have a look at these.
Nice article @Jman! I love full-face wedges, and the improvements make them even more tempting – especially the C-grind on the higher lofts for more versatility around the green.
Nice write up Jman. These seem right up my alley, more so than the RTX 6 release. My miss seems to be toe side with wedges and I’ve never tried full face before.
I was considering a 58° when the RTX 6 release came out. But I like the idea of the full face and the water displacement these offer.
Thanks for the write up. They look really good in picture.
If I was smart about golf, I would buy one of these. Just saying. 😀
Thanks for the write up @Jman those look good. The pic with the detailed grooves is cool to see.

I’m most eager to get an in hand look at this. I never had any issue manipulating the previous version, but a little massaging there to make it more versatile and that could be exciting.
Good write up. This honestly should be one of the best selling wedges out there if people actually lived by the “if it makes me better” statement.
I do like the way these look. They’re like a combination of the CBX Zipcore and CBX Full Face wedges I already have. I really need to get some actual data from my Cleveland wedges compared to the Mizuno wedges in my bag. I need to see if I’d be gaining any spin or other performance factors if I switched.
I play a cbx at 54 and an rtx3 at 58, I’ve been looking to upgrade within the next year or so. The performance with the 54 cbx has been game changing, I know that sounds like pretty weak, overused hyperbole, but it has quite literally changed how I play from 70-90 yards out. The extra forgiveness makes it so consistent that I will often play to this distance on short par 4s and par 5s, which has helped my game in a big way. I might not be exactly ready to replace my wedge set up yet, but the RTX3 is on notice.
That said, if they offer this in black, take my money.

Black it seems, always come later. How’s Iowa City treating you these days?
I’m curious if we’ll continue to see tech trickle down and be implemented in the Smart Sole line up?
Adding the C grind to the higher lofted wedges is big for me. It was one the reasons I only briefly gamed a CBX in the past.

Pretty good, retired now playing some golf down here in Arkansas. Excited to try these out. Hope they have them when I do my fitting in a few weeks.
When we swing through this Spring , have to try a rematch at Blue Top Ridge. Warmer and drier conditions though.;)
There are several steel shaft options that are no charge upgrades too!
OH My! As a CBX homer I really like what I’m seeing and hearing. If the newly designed bounce chamfer is what its saying these will be chicken dinner for me… I loved the last couple versions, but I sometimes had a tendency to get too steep and dig. Can’t wait to see these in person! Great write up @JMan!
